Abstract

Localized heating can use a fixed-frequency planar transmission line resonators arranged along a main-line, selected by tuning an electromagnetic input signal frequency applied to the main line for depositing heat in an adjacent active substrate. More generally, adjusting input signal frequency can be used to selectively address and energize an electromagnetic-to-heat, an electromagnetic-to-vibration, or other transducer to controllably direct energy toward a desired transducer load. Resonators or other electromagnetically energized transducers can be arranged to electromagnetically interfere, such that specifying or adjusting a relative phase of applied electrical signals can be used to specify or adjust the energy directed toward a desired transducer load. Temperature sensing can characterize a material in a target region near the transducer. A cold-hot-cold temperature profile can better manage temperature and avoid overheating a dielectric material such as the active substrate material.

Claims (22)

. A transmission line based control device for an integrated transducer, the device comprising:

a planar resonator configured to receive an AC electromagnetic input signal directly, or via an electrically conductive main line coupled with the resonator, wherein the resonator is constructed of a planar electrically conductive resonator trace that is configured to resonate at its characteristic AC electromagnetic input signal frequency using the AC electromagnetic input signal that is received to frequency-select, without requiring a switch, to selectively energize the transducer at a first energy level; and

a ground structure, at least of portion of which is local to the planar resonator.

. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ground structure is capacitively coupled to the resonator trace of the planar resonator.

. The device of claim 2 , wherein the ground structure is capacitively coupled to the resonator trace of the planar resonator via a specified spacing between the planar resonator and the ground structure.

. The device of claim 3 , wherein the specified spacing between the planar resonator and the ground structure does not include any intervening electrically conductive traces in the specified spacing.

. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ground structure includes an electrically conductive ground trace.

. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ground structure includes an electrically conductive ground plane.

. The device of claim 6 , wherein the ground plane includes first and second ground planes that are offset from each other in a direction perpendicular to both of the first and second ground planes.

. The device of claim 7 , wherein the resonator trace is sandwiched between the first and second ground planes.

. The device of claim 8 , wherein the resonator trace is electrically insulated from the first and second ground planes.

. The device of claim 1 , wherein the resonator trace includes a plurality of electrically conductive segments that are electrically interconnected to each other and physically separated from each other by an intersegment-spacing, W.

. The device of claim 10 , wherein a cumulative length of the plurality of electrically conductive segments plus electrical interconnections between individual ones of the electrically conductive segments corresponds to a specified number of have wavelengths of a specified addressing frequency used to address the resonator.

. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ground structure is electrically connected to the resonator trace of the planar resonator.

. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a substrate providing or coupled to the transducer.

. The device of claim 1 , further comprising the transducer.

. The device of claim 14 , wherein the transducer includes an electromagnetic-energy-to-heat transducer.

. The device of claim 14 , wherein the transducer includes an electromagnetic-energy-to-vibration transducer.

. The device of claim 1 , wherein the resonator trace and the ground structure form a grounded strip line arrangement.

. The device of claim 1 , including first and second planar resonators that are configured to resonate at different frequencies.

. The device of claim 18 , wherein the first and second planar resonators are electrically connected to a shared main line for providing an electromagnetic input signal for selectively actuating resonance of the first planar resonator without actuating resonance of the second planar resonator.

. The device of claim 19 , wherein the first and second planar resonators share the ground structure.
