Abstract

A surge protective device (SPD) assembly module includes a polymeric outer enclosure, an SPD module, a first terminal, and a second terminal. The polymeric outer enclosure defines an enclosed, environmentally sealed enclosure chamber. The SPD module is disposed in the enclosure chamber. The SPD module defines an environmentally sealed SPD chamber and includes: first and second electrically conductive electrode members; and a varistor member formed of a varistor material and electrically connected between the first and second electrode members. The varistor member is disposed in the SPD chamber between the first and second electrode members. The first terminal is electrically connected to the first electrode member and extending out from the outer enclosure. The second terminal is electrically connected to the second electrode member and extending out from the outer enclosure.

Claims (27)

1 . A surge protective device (SPD) assembly module comprising:

an environmentally sealed polymeric outer enclosure;

an SPD module disposed in the polymeric outer enclosure, the SPD module comprising:

a housing electrode comprised of an end wall and a sidewall having a planar contact surface opposite the end wall;

an end cap disposed against the planar contact surface defining a chamber;

an inner electrode at least partially disposed in the chamber, the inner electrode spaced apart from the sidewall, the inner electrode member having a portion at least partially extending through the end cap;

at least one varistor interposed between and electrically connected to each of the housing electrode and inner electrode; and,

an electrically conductive meltable member disposed in the chamber and surrounding the inner electrode, the meltable member configured to melt responsive to heat in the SPD module thereby forming an electrical short circuit path between the housing electrode and the inner electrode;

a terminal busbar electrically connected to the inner electrode comprised of a first terminal and a second terminal, the first and second terminals extending outward from opposite sides of the polymeric outer enclosure;

a terminal bracket electrically connected to the housing electrode; and,

an electrical cable connected to the terminal bracket, the electrical cable extending outward from the polymeric outer enclosure.

2 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 wherein the SPD module further includes a gas discharge tube (GDT) disposed in the chamber and connected in electrical series with the varistor member between the housing electrode and the inner electrode.

3 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 further comprising a biasing device applying an axially compressive load to the varistor member.

4 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 wherein the varistor member comprises a varistor wafer.

5 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 further comprising an earth cable electrically connected to the terminal busbar and extending out from the polymeric outer enclosure.

6 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 wherein the housing electrode fits snugly in outer enclosure to inhibit or prevent relative movement between the SPD module and the polymeric outer enclosure.

7 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 wherein the polymeric outer enclosure is environmentally sealed in compliance with IP67 rating as per the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60529:1989+AMD1:1999+AMD2:2013.

8 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 wherein:

the polymeric outer enclosure is comprised of first and second shells each defining a respective shell cavity.

9 . The SPD assembly module of claim 8 including fasteners securing the first and second shells to one another.

10 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 wherein:

the polymeric outer enclosure includes fastener holes; and

the polymeric outer enclosure is configured to be mounted on a support using fasteners inserted through the fastener holes.

11 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 further comprising an adhesive for bonding the polymeric outer enclosure to a support.

12 . The SPD assembly module of claim 11 wherein the adhesive is selected from the group consisting of epoxy, and cyanoacrylate-based adhesive.

13 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 wherein the polymeric outer enclosure is configured to be mounted on a support in each of a first orientation and a second orientation inverted from the first orientation.

14 . The SPD assembly module of claim 1 wherein the polymeric outer enclosure is formed of a material including a polymer selected from the group consisting of polysulphone (PSU), polyphenylsulphone (PPSU), and polyethersulphone (PESU).
