Abstract

A communication device may include a processor configured to determine to hand over an established connection with a first communication device based on information indicating a proximity of the first communication device to the communication device, wherein the established connection is configured to exchange data between the communication device and the first communication device according to a first communication protocol. The processor may further encode a message indicating the handover of the established connection for a transmission to a second communication device and may encode data to be transmitted to the first communication device for a transmission to the second communication device according to a second communication protocol.

Claims (38)

1 . A communication device comprising:

a processor configured to:

decode a received message indicating a handover of an established connection to exchange data between a first communication device and a second communication device according to a first communication protocol;

establish a connection with the second communication device according to the first communication protocol based on the decoded message;

encode data for a transmission to the second communication device using the first communication protocol based on received data received from the first communication device using a second communication protocol.

2 . The communication device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a transceiver circuit configured to transmit and/or receive radio communication signals;

wherein the transceiver circuit comprises a first circuit configured to receive and/or transmit the radio communication signals according to the first communication protocol and a second circuit configured to receive and/or transmit the radio communication signals according to the second communication protocol.

3 . The communication device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a measurement circuit to measure received radio communication signals;

wherein the processor is configured to obtain information indicating a proximity based on an output of the measurement circuit.

4 . The communication device of claim 1 ,

wherein the processor is further configured to establish the connection with the second communication device according to the first communication protocol based on the decoded message.

5 . The communication device of claim 1 ,

wherein the processor is further configured to establish the connection with the second communication device according to the first communication protocol based on information indicating a proximity between the communication device and the second communication device.

6 . The communication device of claim 1 ,

wherein the processor is further configured to encode a handover request message indicating the established connection with the second communication device for a transmission to the first communication device;

wherein the handover request message comprises proximity information indicating a proximity of the communication device to the second communication device.

7 . The communication device of claim 1 ,

wherein the processor is further configured to decode the received data according to the second communication protocol and encode the decoded data according to the first communication protocol.

8 . The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the first communication protocol includes a Bluetooth protocol; and wherein the second communication protocol includes an IEEE 802.11 protocol, or a cellular communication protocol.

9 . The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to attempt to establish the connection with the second communication device in response to the decoded message.

10 . The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to encode an acknowledgment message in response to receiving the received data.

11 . The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to encode a handover termination message based on information indicating a proximity of the communication device to the second communication device; wherein the handover termination message indicates a request to hand over the connection between the communication device and the second communication device.

12 . The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the encoded data comprises at least one of audio data, video data, or user data.

13 . The communication device of claim 1 , further comprising a memory configured to buffer the received data.

14 . The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the decoded message comprises an identifier for the second communication device, and wherein the communication device further comprises a memory configured to store the identifier for the second communication device.

15 . A communication device comprising:

a processor configured to:

decode a received message indicating a handover of an established connection to exchange data between a first communication device and a second communication device according to a first communication protocol;

establish a connection with the second communication device according to the first communication protocol based on the decoded message;

encode data for a transmission to the first communication device using second communication protocol based on received data received from the second communication device using the first communication protocol.

16 . The communication device of claim 15 ,

wherein the encoded data comprises the received data received from the second communication device.

17 . The communication device of claim 15 , further comprising a memory configured to buffer the received data.

18 . The communication device of claim 15 , wherein the decoded message comprises an identifier for the second communication device, and wherein the communication device further comprises a memory configured to store the identifier for the second communication device.

19 . The communication device of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to encode a handover termination message based on information indicating a proximity of the communication device to the second communication device; wherein the handover termination message indicates a request to hand over the connection between the communication device and the second communication device.

20 . The communication device of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to encode an acknowledgment message in response to receiving the received data.
