Abstract

A cam race comprising a hardened material (harder than a material of an upper receiver) is provided to increase durability of a firearm. The cam race is fit within a groove within an interior sidewall of an upper receiver of the firearm. The cam race comprises a body that is fit within the groove, and a plurality of fastener pins extending away from a rear face of the body that fit within corresponding through-holes of the upper receiver. Distal ends of each of the fastener pins are deformed to form a riveted connection between the cam race and the upper receiver. The cam race defines a slide face along which a cam pin of the firearm slides during a firing process, thereby increasing the durability of the firearm against undesired formation of defects within the interior sidewall of the upper receiver.

Claims (33)

1 . A system for firearm durability comprising:

a cam race for an upper receiver of a firearm, the cam race comprising:

a body defining a slide face and an opposite rear face defined between a first end and a second end; and

a plurality of fastener pins extending away from the opposite rear face, wherein the plurality of fastener pins are integrally formed with the body;

wherein at least one of the first end of the slide face or the second end of the slide face are chamfered.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the body and the plurality of fastener pins comprise a material selected from: steel or titanium.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the body and the plurality of fastener pins are nitride finished.

4 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an upper receiver defining a groove within an interior sidewall, wherein the groove defines a plurality of through-holes extending through the interior sidewall of the upper receiver to an exterior sidewall of the upper receiver.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the body of the cam race and the groove within the interior sidewall of the upper receiver are sized to receive the cam race within the groove in a friction fit.

6 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of fastener pins are received within the plurality of through-holes with a friction fit.

7 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of fastener pins define a non-circular cross-sectional shape.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of through-holes define a cross-sectional shape corresponding to the plurality of fastener pins.

9 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the exterior sidewall of the upper receiver defines counter sinks where the plurality of through-holes reach the exterior sidewall of the upper receiver.

10 . A firearm comprising the system of claim 1 .

11 . A method of manufacturing a system for firearm durability comprising:

forming a cam race for an upper receiver of a firearm, the cam race comprising:

a body defining a slide face and an opposite rear face defined between a first end and a second end; and

a plurality of fastener pins extending away from the opposite rear face, wherein the plurality of fastener pins are integrally formed with the body;

wherein at least one of the first end of the slide face or the second end of the slide face are chamfered.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the body and the plurality of fastener pins comprise a material selected from: steel or titanium.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the body and the plurality of fastener pins are nitride finished.

14 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

forming an upper receiver defining a groove within an interior sidewall, wherein the groove defines a plurality of through-holes extending through the interior sidewall of the upper receiver to an exterior sidewall of the upper receiver.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the body of the cam race and the groove within the interior sidewall of the upper receiver are sized to receive the cam race within the groove in a friction fit.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of fastener pins are received within the plurality of through-holes with a friction fit.

17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of fastener pins define a non-circular cross-sectional shape.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of through-holes define a cross-sectional shape corresponding to the plurality of fastener pins.

19 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the exterior sidewall of the upper receiver defines counter sinks where the plurality of through-holes reach the exterior sidewall of the upper receiver.

20 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising securing the cam race to an inside of an upper receiver by:

inserting the plurality of fastener pins through a plurality of through holes in the upper receiver;

receiving the body within a groove in an inner surface of the upper receiver; and

securing a portion of the plurality of fastener pins extending through the plurality of through holes to an exterior surface of the upper receiver.
