Abstract

Example techniques may involve calibration with multiple recording devices. An implementation may include a mobile device receiving data indicating that a calibration sequence for multiple playback devices has been initiated in a venue. The mobile device displays a prompt to include the first mobile device in the calibration sequence for the multiple playback devices and a particular selectable control that, when selected, includes the first mobile device in the calibration sequence. During the calibration sequence, the mobile device records calibration audio as played back by the multiple playback devices and transmits data representing the recorded calibration audio to a computing device. The computing device determines a calibration for the multiple playback devices in the venue based on the data representing the calibration audio recorded by the first mobile device and data representing calibration audio recorded by second mobile devices while the multiple playback devices played back the calibration audio.

Claims (61)

1 . A system comprising:

a first playback device comprising at least one first audio transducer;

a second playback device comprising a first network interface, at least one second audio transducer and at least one microphone;

a control device comprising a second network interface;

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

play back calibration audio via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device in a listening environment;

capture, via the at least one microphone of the second playback device, audio data representing at least a portion of the calibration audio played back via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device;

send, via the first network interface to the control device, data representing the captured audio;

determine, via the control device, a calibration that, when applied to playback by the first playback device, at least partially offsets acoustic characteristics of the listening environment as represented in the captured audio data; and

cause, via the second network interface, the first playback device to apply the determined calibration.

The system of claim 1 , further comprising a third playback device comprising at least one third audio transducer and at least one additional microphone, wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

capture, via the at least one additional microphone of the third playback device, additional audio data representing at least an additional portion of the calibration audio played back via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device, wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine the calibration comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine the calibration to at least partially offset the acoustic characteristics of the listening environment as represented in the audio data and the captured additional audio data.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

normalize the additional audio data to offset one or more differences in capture of the additional audio data as compared with capture of the audio data.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor comprises a first processor, a second processor, and a third processor, wherein the first playback device comprises the first processor, the second playback device comprises the second processor, and the control device comprises the third processor, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine the calibration comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine, via the third processor of the control device, the calibration.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the first network interface comprises an IEEE 802.15-compatible wireless network interface, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to send, via the first network interface to the control device, the data representing the captured audio comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

send, via the IEEE 802.15-compatible wireless network interface to the control device, data representing the captured audio.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the second playback device is a wireless headphone.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

form a synchrony group including the first playback device and the second playback device.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to play back calibration audio via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device in the listening environment comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

play back calibration audio via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device in the listening environment in synchrony with one or more additional playback devices that are configured in a bonded room configuration with the first playback device, and wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine one or more additional calibrations that, when applied to playback by the one or more additional playback devices, at least partially offsets acoustic characteristics of the listening environment as represented in the captured audio data.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

detect a trigger condition that triggers calibration of the first playback device; and

based on detection of the trigger condition, cause the first playback device to output the calibration audio and the second playback device to capture the audio data.

The system of claim 9 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to detect the trigger condition that triggers calibration of the first playback device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

detect that a previous calibration is no longer valid.

11 . At least one non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions that are executable by at least one processor such that a system is configured to:

play back calibration audio via at least one first audio transducer of a first playback device in a listening environment, wherein the first playback device comprises the at least one first audio transducer;

capture, via at least one microphone of a second playback device, audio data representing at least a portion of the calibration audio played back via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device, wherein the second playback device comprises a first network interface, at least one second audio transducer, and the at least one microphone;

send, via the first network interface to a control device, data representing the captured audio, wherein the control device comprises a second network interface;

determine, via the control device, a calibration that, when applied to playback by the first playback device, at least partially offsets acoustic characteristics of the listening environment as represented in the captured audio data; and

cause, via the second network interface, the first playback device to apply the determined calibration.

The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , further comprising a third playback device comprising at least one third audio transducer and at least one additional microphone, wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

capture, via the at least one additional microphone of the third playback device, additional audio data representing at least an additional portion of the calibration audio played back via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device, wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine the calibration comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine the calibration to at least partially offset the acoustic characteristics of the listening environment as represented in the audio data and the captured additional audio data.

13 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

normalize the additional audio data to offset one or more differences in capture of the additional audio data as compared with capture of the audio data.

The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one processor comprises a first processor, a second processor, and a third processor, wherein the first playback device comprises the first processor, the second playback device comprises the second processor, and the control device comprises the third processor, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine the calibration comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine, via the third processor of the control device, the calibration.

The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the first network interface comprises an IEEE 802.15-compatible wireless network interface, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to send, via the first network interface to the control device, the data representing the captured audio comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

send, via the IEEE 802.15-compatible wireless network interface to the control device, data representing the captured audio.

16 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the second playback device is a wireless headphone.

17 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to play back calibration audio via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device in the listening environment comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

play back calibration audio via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device in the listening environment in synchrony with one or more additional playback devices that are configured in a bonded room configuration with the first playback device, and wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine one or more additional calibrations that, when applied to playback by the one or more additional playback devices, at least partially offsets acoustic characteristics of the listening environment as represented in the captured audio data.

18 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

detect a trigger condition that triggers calibration of the first playback device; and

based on detection of the trigger condition, cause the first playback device to output the calibration audio and the second playback device to capture the audio data.

19 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to detect the trigger condition that triggers calibration of the first playback device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

detect that a previous calibration is no longer valid.

20 . A method comprising:

playing back calibration audio via at least one first audio transducer of a first playback device in a listening environment, wherein the first playback device comprises the at least one first audio transducer;

capturing, via at least one microphone of a second playback device, audio data representing at least a portion of the calibration audio played back via the at least one first audio transducer of the first playback device, wherein the second playback device comprises a first network interface, at least one second audio transducer, and the at least one microphone;

sending, via the first network interface to a control device, data representing the captured audio, wherein the control device comprises a second network interface;

determining, via the control device, a calibration that, when applied to playback by the first playback device, at least partially offsets acoustic characteristics of the listening environment as represented in the captured audio data; and

causing, via the second network interface, the first playback device to apply the determined calibration.
