Abstract

Systems for use with a medical device for controlling an infusion device are provided. In one aspect, a system includes an infusion device that is configurable with operating limit parameters for providing medication to a patient, and a limiting system. The limiting system receives laboratory information associated with a patient, compares current operating parameters of the infusion device with the operating limit parameters in view of the laboratory information for the patient before and during administration of the medication to the patient by the infusion device, determines that administration of the medication by the infusion device should be prevented based on comparing the operating parameters with the operating limit parameters in view of the laboratory information and, responsive to determining that the operation should be prevented, prevents the administration of the medication by the infusion device, and generates a notification indicating that the operating limit parameters require modification.

Claims (63)

1 . An infusion system, comprising:

an infusion pump configurable to deliver a medication to a patient; and

one or more processors configured to:

receive one or more current operating parameters for controlling a delivery of the medication to the patient associated with the infusion pump;

receive one or more patient parameters associated with the patient, the one or more patient parameters comprising at least one of a patient weight or a patient age;

compare the one or more current operating parameters with one or more operating limit parameters in view of the one or more patient parameters before or during the delivery of the medication to the patient by the infusion pump;

cause the infusion pump to prevent the delivery of the medication;

prompt an adjustment to the delivery of the medication based on comparing the one or more current operating parameters with the one or more operating limit parameters in view of the one or more patient parameters;

receive a first user input to adjust the delivery of the medication;

determine that the one or more current operating parameters are compliant with the one or more operating limit parameters in view of the one or more patient parameters;

cause the delivery of the medication by the infusion pump to be started based on the determining that the one or more current operating parameters are compliant;

receive a second user input to change the one or more current operating parameters during the delivery of the medication;

determine whether the change to the one or more current operating parameters during the delivery of the medication to the patient exceeds a predetermined threshold change percentage; and

generate a notification regarding the change to the one or more current operating parameters during the delivery of the medication.

2 . An infusion pump configurable to deliver a medication to a patient, the infusion pump comprising:

one or more processors configured to:

receive one or more current operating parameters for controlling a delivery of the medication to the patient associated with the infusion pump;

receive one or more patient parameters associated with the patient, the one or more patient parameters comprising at least one of a patient weight or a patient age;

compare the one or more current operating parameters with one or more operating limit parameters in view of the one or more patient parameters before or during the delivery of the medication to the patient by the infusion pump;

cause the infusion pump to prevent the delivery of the medication;

prompt an adjustment to the delivery of the medication based on comparing the one or more current operating parameters with the one or more operating limit parameters in view of the one or more patient parameters;

receive a first user input to adjust the delivery of the medication;

determine that the one or more current operating parameters are compliant with the one or more operating limit parameters in view of the one or more patient parameters;

cause the delivery of the medication by the infusion pump to be started based on the determining that the one or more current operating parameters are compliant;

initiate a modification of the one or more operating limit parameters for the delivery of the medication to the patient based on comparing the one or more current operating parameters with the one or more operating limit parameters in view of the one or more patient parameters; and

generate a notification indicating that the modification was initiated.

3 . The infusion pump of claim 2 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to:

receive an input from a user to override the modification of the one or more operating limit parameters; and

cause the initiated modification to be overridden based on the input.

4 . The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more operating limit parameters comprise a maximum or minimum total amount of the medication to provide to the patient over a period of time.

5 . The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to compare the one or more current operating parameters to a weight-based limit or an age-based limit.

6 . The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to receive an adjustment to at least one of the one or more current operating parameters.

7 . The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the infusion pump and the one or more processors are integrated into a medical device.

8 . An infusion pump configurable to deliver a medication to a patient, the infusion pump comprising:

one or more processors configured to:

receive one or more current operating parameters for controlling a delivery of the medication to the patient associated with the infusion pump;

identify a first parameter value associated with the infusion pump for the delivery of the medication to the patient;

receive a second parameter value of a patient physiological parameter input into a device different than the infusion pump;

compare the first parameter value with one or more operating limit parameters in view of the second parameter value before or during the delivery of the medication to the patient by the infusion pump;

determine that a difference between the first parameter value and the second parameter value does not satisfy a threshold variation;

cause the infusion pump to prevent the delivery of the medication;

prompt a modification of the one or more operating limit parameters based on the difference;

receive a first user input to adjust the delivery of the medication;

determine that the first parameter value is compliant with the one or more operating limit parameters in view of the second parameter value; and

cause the delivery of the medication by the infusion pump to be started based on the determining that the first parameter value is compliant.

9 . The infusion system of claim 1 , further comprising a transceiver configured to communicate at least one of: the one or more current operating parameters, the one or more patient parameters, and the notification regarding the change to the one or more current operating parameters during the delivery of the medication.

10 . The infusion pump of claim 2 , further configured to:

receive a second user input to change the one or more current operating parameters during the delivery of the medication;

determine whether the change to the one or more current operating parameters during the delivery of the medication to the patient exceeds a predetermined threshold change percentage; and

generate a notification regarding the change to the one or more current operating parameters during the delivery of the medication.

11 . The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to receive patient-specific information comprising one or more of a medication ordered for the patient, a time at which the medication is ordered for the patient, a treatment plan for the patient, a medication resistance of the patient, a height of the patient, a body surface area of the patient, a gender of the patient, a genetic makeup of the patient, a body surface area of the patient, and a medical history of the patient.

12 . The infusion pump of claim 2 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to receive patient-specific information comprising one or more of a medication ordered for the patient, a time at which the medication is ordered for the patient, a treatment plan for the patient, a medication resistance of the patient, a weight of the patient, a height of the patient, a body surface area of the patient, a gender of the patient, a genetic makeup of the patient, a body surface area of the patient, and a medical history of the patient.

13 . The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to:

identify a first parameter value associated with the infusion pump for delivery of the medication to the patient;

receive a second parameter value of a patient physiological parameter input into a device different than the infusion pump;

determine that a difference between the first parameter value and the second parameter value does not satisfy a threshold variation; and

prompt a modification of the one or more operating limit parameters based on the difference, wherein the delivery of the medication is adjusted based on the modified one or more operating limit parameters.

14 . The infusion pump of claim 2 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to:

identify a first parameter value associated with the infusion pump for delivery of the medication to the patient;

receive a second parameter value of a patient physiological parameter input into a device different than the infusion pump;
