Abstract

A trailer diagnostic and monitoring system includes a system controller having a controller body, and a power unit for engage a wiring harness of the trailer. A location identification unit and wireless communication device are positioned within the controller body, and a plurality of hub sensor assemblies are positioned along the axle hubs of the trailer. Each of the assemblies including functionality for monitoring and reporting the temperature of a respective axle hub, and the pressure of the trailer tire secured to the respective axle hub. A process specific serial forwarder device communicatively links each of the hub sensor assemblies to the system controller. A trailer diagnostic and monitoring application for execution on a remote computing device includes functionality for communicating with the wireless communication device to receive trailer location information, tire pressure readings and axle hub temperatures.

Claims (40)

1 . A trailer diagnostic and monitoring system, comprising:

a system controller having a controller body that is configured to be positioned along a vehicular trailer;

a power unit that is configured to engage a wiring harness of the trailer;

a wireless communication device that is positioned within the controller body, said wireless communication unit including functionality for communicating with an external device;

a plurality of hub sensor assemblies, that are communicatively linked to the system controller; and

a machine learning module having at least one processor and memory that is in communication with the plurality of hub sensor assemblies,

wherein each of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies are positioned adjacent to a tire of the trailer, and

wherein the machine learning module is configured to analyze data from at least one of the hub sensor assemblies, and transmit a predictive failure analysis to the external device.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies further comprises:

a main body; and

a hub connector for securing the main body against an axle hub of the trailer.

3 . The system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a temperature sensor that is positioned along the main body, said temperature sensor being configured to measure a temperature of the axle hub of the trailer.

4 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a serial forwarder device that is communicatively linked to the system controller, said forwarder device being configured to receive power and operating instructions from the system controller.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the serial forwarder device includes a wireless transceiver, and said wireless transceiver includes functionality for communicating with a tire pressure monitoring sensor.

6 . The system of claim 4 , wherein each of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies includes a tire pressure monitoring sensor, and

wherein the serial forwarder device includes a wireless transceiver,

said wireless transceiver including functionality for communicating with the tire pressure monitoring sensor of each of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies.

7 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the serial forwarder device is communicatively linked to each of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the serial forwarder device includes functionality for transmitting the operating instructions and received power to each of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies.

9 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the serial forwarder device includes functionality for receiving data from each of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies, and for sending the received data to the system controller.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the received data includes at least one of a tire pressure and a hub temperature that is reported from at least one of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies.

11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the received data includes each of a tire pressure and a hub temperature that is reported from at least one of the pluralities of hub sensor assemblies.

12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the received data includes at least one of a tire pressures and a hub temperature that is reported from each of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies.

13 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the received data includes each of a tire pressure and a hub temperature that is reported from each of the plurality of hub sensor assemblies.

14 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a trailer diagnostic and monitoring application, said application comprising machine readable instructions for execution on a computing device having a processor, a memory, and a display screen,

wherein the application includes functionality for communicating with the wireless communication device of the system controller.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the machine learning module is configured to identify patterns indicative of a performance of the vehicular trailer and to provide the patterns to the application.

16 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a machine learning module having at least one processor and memory that is in communication with the plurality of hub sensor assemblies.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the machine learning module is configured to identify patterns indicative of a performance of the vehicular trailer.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the identified patterns are based on data provided to the controller by the plurality of hub sensor assemblies, and said data includes at least one of a tire pressure and a hub temperature.

19 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the machine learning module is further configured to generate a predictive maintenance alert based on the analyzed data, and to transmit the predictive maintenance alert to the external device.

20 . A trailer diagnostic and monitoring system, comprising:

a system controller having a controller body that is configured to be positioned along a vehicular trailer;

a power unit that is configured to engage a wiring harness of the trailer;

a wireless communication device that is positioned within the controller body, said wireless communication unit including functionality for communicating with an external device;

a plurality of hub sensor assemblies that are communicatively linked to the system controller, each of the hub sensor assemblies including a main body and a hub connector having functionality for directly engaging a brake caliper mount of an axle, and for securing a curved section of the main body directly against an axle hub of the trailer.
