Cable routing and assemblies for medical device handles
Medical devices that include a medical tool, a handle and a flexible cable bundle passing through the handle. The handles and cable routing therethrough are adapted to reduce noise within the cable.
1 . An ultrasound imaging catheter, comprising:
an elongate shaft sized and configured to be advanced within a patient;
a handle adjacent the elongate shaft sized and positioned to remain outside of the patient, the handle including an outer surface configured to be gripped by a user;
a distal tip including an ultrasound transducer;
an elongate cable bundle in communication with the ultrasound transducer, the elongate cable bundle passing through the elongate shaft and extending into the handle,
wherein the elongate cable bundle passes through a ferrite bead that is secured within the handle, wherein the ferrite bead is configured to provide between 90 ohms and 102 ohms of impedance at a frequency in the range 5 megahertz (MHz) to 10 MHz, wherein the relationship between the impedance (X), frequency (f), and capacitance (C) is based on

and wherein a shield layer of the cable bundle is removed from the elongate cable bundle within the handle at a location such that the shield layer does not pass through the ferrite bead that is secured within the handle.
2 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 1 , wherein the elongate cable bundle is folded upon itself in a folded region within the handle, and wherein the shield layer has been removed from the cable bundle before the folded region such that the shield layer is not folded within the handle.
3 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 1 , wherein the shield layer is coupled to a receptacle of the handle.
4 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 1 , wherein the cable bundle is coupled to a plurality of printed circuit boards that are secured within the handle.
5 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 1 , wherein the cable bundle extends from a proximal end of an elongate shaft that is disposed within the handle.
6 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 1 , wherein the cable bundle extends radially outside of a plurality of printed circuit boards that are disposed within the handle.
7 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 1 , wherein the cable bundle passes between first and second of a plurality of printed circuit boards that are disposed within the handle.
8 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 1 , wherein the cable bundle includes a movable portion that is axially moveable within the handle.
9 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 1 , wherein the cable bundle is not adapted to be moved axially within the handle after the handle is assembled.
10 . An ultrasound imaging catheter, comprising:
an elongate shaft sized and configured to be advanced within a patient;
a handle adjacent the elongate shaft sized and positioned to remain outside of the patient, the handle including an outer surface configured to be gripped by a user;
a distal tip including an ultrasound transducer;
an elongate cable bundle in communication with the ultrasound transducer, the elongate cable bundle passing proximally through the elongate shaft and extending into the handle comprising an electrical noise suppression member is configured to provide between 90 ohms and 102 ohms of impedance at a frequency in the range 5 megahertz (MHz) to 10 MHz, wherein the relationship between the impedance (X), frequency (f), and capacitance (C) is based on X=wherein the elongate cable bundle is folded upon itself in a folded region within the handle, and wherein a shield layer of the cable is removed from the cable bundle within the handle before the folded region such that the shield layer is not disposed in the folded region.
11 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 10 , wherein the shield layer is coupled to a receptacle of the handle.
12 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 10 , wherein the cable bundle is coupled to a plurality of printed circuit boards that are disposed within the handle.
13 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 10 , wherein the cable bundle extends from a proximal end of an elongate shaft within the handle.
14 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 13 , wherein the cable bundle extends radially outside of a plurality of printed circuit boards that are disposed within the handle.
15 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 13 , wherein the cable bundle passes between first and second of a plurality of printed circuit boards that are disposed within the handle.
16 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 10 , wherein the cable bundle is axially moveable within the handle.
17 . The ultrasound imaging catheter of claim 10 , wherein the cable bundle is axially immoveable within the handle.
18 . An ultrasound imaging catheter, comprising:
an elongate shaft sized and configured to be advanced within a patient;
a handle adjacent the elongate shaft sized and positioned to remain outside of the patient, the handle including an outer surface configured to be gripped by a user;
a distal tip including an ultrasound transducer;
an elongate cable bundle in communication with the ultrasound transducer, the elongate cable bundle passing through the elongate shaft and extending into the handle,
wherein the elongate cable bundle passes through a lumen of an electrical noise suppression member therethrough that is secured within the handle, wherein the electrical noise suppression member is configured to provide between 90 ohms and 102 ohms of impedance at a frequency in the range 5 megahertz (MHz) to 10 MHz, relationship is exemplified by

and wherein a shield layer of the cable bundle is removed from the elongate cable bundle within the handle at a location such that the shield layer does not pass through the lumen of the electrical noise suppression member that is secured within the handle.
19 . The catheter of claim 18 , wherein the electrical noise suppression member comprises one or both of a material or configuration to suppress electromagnetic interference from the elongate cable bundle.
20 . The catheter of claim 18 , wherein the electrical noise suppression member comprises one or both of a material or configuration to suppress electromagnetic interference into the elongate cable bundle.
21 . The catheter of claim 18 , wherein the electrical noise suppression member comprises a ferrite bead.
22 . The catheter of claim 18 , further including any suitable feature or component of any one of claim 17 .
