Abstract

An integrated furnace controller (IFC) for communicative coupling to a modulating gas valve assembly includes a processor and a memory. The memory stores instructions that program the processor to receive a call for heat and output a command to the modulating gas valve assembly in response to the call for heat. The command instructs the modulating gas valve assembly to control the modulating gas valve based on a desired gas flow rate and an orientation of the modulating gas valve.

Claims (31)

1 . A gas-powered heating system comprising:

a burner;

a modulating gas valve assembly connected between a gas source and the burner, the gas valve assembly including:

a modulating gas valve to variably control a flow of gas through the gas valve assembly; and

a control circuit including a controller and a valve memory; and

an integrated furnace controller (IFC) including a processor and a memory, the IFC communicatively coupled to the modulating gas valve assembly, the memory storing instructions that program the processor to:

receive a call for heat; and

output a command to the modulating gas valve assembly in response to the call for heat, the command instructing the modulating gas valve assembly to control the modulating gas valve based on a desired gas flow rate and an orientation of the modulating gas valve.

2 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 1 , wherein the IFC's memory stores instructions that program the processor to:

receive the orientation of the modulating gas valve relative to gravity; and

store the orientation of the modulating gas valve in the memory.

3 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 2 , wherein the IFC includes a user input system, and the instructions program the processor to receive the orientation of the modulating gas valve relative to gravity by a user input through the user input system.

4 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 3 , wherein the user input system comprises at least one input device and at least one display device.

5 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 4 , herein the at least one input device comprises a plurality of input buttons and the display device comprises a seven segment display device.

6 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 3 , wherein the user input system comprises a touchscreen display operable as a display device and an input device.

7 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 2 , wherein the processor is programmed to receive the orientation of the modulating gas valve relative to gravity by receiving an image and determining the orientation of the modulating gas valve from the image.

8 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 7 , wherein the image comprises one of a barcode, a QR code, or a picture of at least a portion of the gas-powered heating system.

9 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 2 , further comprising a sensor operable to sense its orientation and output an orientation signal; and

the instructions program the processor of the IFC to receive the orientation of the modulating gas valve relative to gravity by receiving the orientation signal output from the sensor and determining the orientation of the modulating gas valve based on the orientation signal.

10 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 9 , wherein the modulating gas valve assembly includes the sensor and the orientation signal corresponds to the orientation of the modulating gas valve.

11 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 9 , wherein the IFC includes the sensor, the orientation signal corresponds to an orientation of the IFC, the memory stores an orientation of the modulating gas valve assembly relative to the IFC, and the instructions program the processor of the IFC to receive the orientation of the modulating gas valve relative to gravity by receiving the orientation signal output from the sensor and determining the orientation of the modulating gas valve based on the orientation signal and the stored orientation of the modulating gas valve assembly relative to the IFC.

12 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 9 , wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer.

13 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 1 , wherein the valve memory stores instructions that program the controller to:

receive the orientation of the modulating gas valve relative to gravity; and

store the orientation of the modulating gas valve in the memory.

14 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 13 , further comprising:

a sensor operable to sense its orientation and output an orientation signal; and

the instructions stored in the valve memory program the controller to receive the orientation of the modulating gas valve relative to gravity by receiving the orientation signal output from the sensor and determining the orientation of the modulating gas valve based on the orientation signal.

15 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions program the processor to calculate adjustments to the modulating gas valve control to achieve a same desired gas flow rate in any orientation of the modulating gas valve relative to gravity.

16 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions program the processor to output the command instructing the modulating gas valve assembly to control the modulating gas valve based on a desired gas flow rate and the orientation of the modulating gas valve by outputting the desired flow rate and the orientation of the modulating gas valve to the modulating gas valve assembly.

17 . The gas-powered heating system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions program the processor to output the command instructing the modulating gas valve assembly to control the modulating gas valve based on a desired gas flow rate and the orientation of the modulating gas valve by determining a control instruction equivalent to the desired flow rate taking into account the orientation of the modulating gas valve, and outputting the control instruction to the modulating gas valve assembly.
