Abstract

Methods, systems, apparatus, and non-transitory computer readable media are described for using a vehicle as a payment device. Various aspects may include receiving a selection of a stored financial card or financial account at a vehicle head unit. The selected financial card or financial account may be transmitted to a point-of-sale (POS) terminal for making a payment by transmitting a tokenized card number to the POS terminal. The tokenized card number may be transmitted over a very short-range communication link to ensure that the transmission is secure. For example, electronic circuitry may be attached to the exterior of the vehicle, where the electronic circuitry may be within a threshold distance (e.g. one inch, three inches, six inches, one foot, three feet, etc.) of the POS terminal. The tokenized card number may be transmitted from the vehicle head unit to the electronic circuitry and then to the POS terminal.

Claims (59)

1 . A computer-implemented method for purchasing fuel from a financial account of a user via wireless communication with a merchant communication terminal or server associated with a merchant location, the method executed by one or more processors programmed to perform the method, the method comprising:

generating, by one or more processors, a virtual map display of a geographic area including indications of merchant locations;

in response to receiving a selection of a merchant location presented on the virtual map display, presenting a payment activation screen;

receiving, by the one or more processors, a selection by the user of a financial account for initiating a payment process at the merchant location;

authenticating the user to ensure the user is authorized to use the financial account by receiving a facial scan from the user;

in response to receiving a selection on the payment activation screen to make a payment, presenting, by the one or more processors, a payment authorization screen indicating a method of payment associated with the selected financial account;

determining, by the one or more processors, a vehicle is within a predetermined distance of the merchant location; and

in response to authenticating the user and in response to determining the vehicle is within the predetermined distance of the merchant location, transmitting, by the one or more processors, a request to purchase fuel to a merchant communication terminal or server associated with the merchant location.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

obtaining, by the one or more processors, a token representing financial data for the financial account; and

transmitting, by the one or more processors, the token corresponding to the selected financial account to the merchant communication terminal or server.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein obtaining the token includes:

transmitting, by the one or more processors, the financial data to a third-party token server; and

receiving, by the one or more processors, the token representing the financial data from the third-party token server, wherein the third-party token server stores the token and the financial data.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein authenticating the user further includes at least one of:

receiving login information, or

receiving mobile device identification information.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting, by the one or more processors, a financial card entry screen including one or more user controls for receiving financial data for the financial account.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the selection of the merchant location presented on the virtual map display includes detecting that the vehicle is within the predetermined distance of the merchant location, and wherein the payment activation screen is automatically activated in response to detecting that the vehicle is within a predetermined range of the merchant communication terminal.

7 . A computer system configured for purchasing fuel from a financial account of a user via wireless communication with a merchant communication terminal or server associated with a merchant location, the computer system comprising the one or more processors configured to:

generate a virtual map display of a geographic area including indications of merchant locations;

in response to receiving a selection of a merchant location presented on the virtual map display, present a payment activation screen;

receive a selection by the user of a financial account for initiating a payment process at the merchant location;

authenticate the user to ensure the user is authorized to use the financial account by receiving a facial scan from the user;

in response to receiving a selection on the payment activation screen to make a payment, present a payment authorization screen indicating a method of payment associated with the selected financial account;

determine a vehicle is within a predetermined distance of the merchant location; and

in response to authenticating the user and in response to determining the vehicle is within the predetermined distance of the merchant location, transmit a request to purchase fuel to a merchant communication terminal or server associated with the merchant location.

8 . The computer system of claim 7 , wherein the computer system is further configured to:

obtain a token representing financial data for the financial account; and

transmit the token corresponding to the selected financial account to the merchant communication terminal or server.

9 . The computer system of claim 8 , wherein to obtain the token, the computer system is configured to:

transmit the financial data to a third-party token server; and

receive the token representing the financial data from the third-party token server, wherein the third-party token server stores the token and the financial data.

10 . The computer system of claim 7 , wherein to authenticate the user, the computer system is further configured to at least one of:

receive login information, or

receive mobile device identification information.

11 . The computer system of claim 7 , wherein the computer system is further configured to:

present a financial card entry screen including one or more user controls for receiving financial data for the financial account.

12 . The computer system of claim 7 , wherein to receive the selection of the merchant location presented on the virtual map display, the computer system is configured to detect that the vehicle is within the predetermined distance of the merchant location, and wherein the payment activation screen is automatically activated in response to detecting that the vehicle is within a predetermined range of the merchant communication terminal.

13 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium for purchasing fuel from a financial account of a user via wireless communication with a merchant communication terminal or server associated with a merchant location, the non-transitory computer-readable medium storing thereon a set of instructions that, when executed on the one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to:

generate a virtual map display of a geographic area including indications of merchant locations;

in response to receiving a selection of a merchant location presented on the virtual map display, present a payment activation screen;

receive a selection by the user of a financial account for initiating a payment process at the merchant location;

authenticate the user to ensure the user is authorized to use the financial account by receiving a facial scan from the user;

in response to receiving a selection on the payment activation screen to make a payment, present a payment authorization screen indicating a method of payment associated with the selected financial account;

determine a vehicle is within a predetermined distance of the merchant location; and

in response to authenticating the user and in response to determining the vehicle is within the predetermined distance of the merchant location, transmit a request to purchase fuel to a merchant communication terminal or server associated with the merchant location.

14 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

obtain a token representing financial data for the financial account; and

transmit the token corresponding to the selected financial account to the merchant communication terminal or server.

15 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein to obtain the token, the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

transmit the financial data to a third-party token server; and

receive the token representing the financial data from the third-party token server, wherein the third-party token server stores the token and the financial data.

16 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein to authenticate the user, the instructions further cause the one or more processors to at least one:

receive login information, or

receive mobile device identification information.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

present a financial card entry screen including one or more user controls for receiving financial data for the financial account.
