Compression staple systems and methods
A compression staple system for bone fixation may include a first drill, configured to create a first hole in a bone, and a drill guide. The drill guide may include a handle, a foot portion coupled to the handle, a first guide sleeve slidably received in the foot portion and including a first aperture configured to guide the first drill towards the bone, and a second guide sleeve slidably received in the foot portion and including a second aperture configured to guide the first drill towards the bone. The first guide sleeve and the second guide sleeve may have a first compression spring configured to bias the first guide sleeve away from the foot portion and towards the bone, and a second compression spring configured to bias the second guide sleeve away from the foot portion and towards the bone.
1 . A compression staple system for bone fixation, the system comprising:
a first drill configured to create a first hole in a bone; and
a drill guide comprising:
a handle;
a foot portion coupled to the handle;
a first guide sleeve slidably received in the foot portion and comprising a first aperture configured to guide the first drill towards the bone; and
a second guide sleeve slidably received in the foot portion and comprising a second aperture configured to guide the first drill towards the bone;
wherein:
the first guide sleeve and the second guide sleeve comprise:
a first compression spring configured to bias the first guide sleeve away from the foot portion and towards the bone; and
a second compression spring configured to bias the second guide sleeve away from the foot portion and towards the bone.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first aperture further comprises a first longitudinal axis, the second aperture further comprises a second longitudinal axis, and the first longitudinal axis is parallel to the second longitudinal axis.
3 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a second drill configured to create a second hole in the bone, wherein:
the first guide sleeve further comprises a third aperture configured to guide the second drill towards the bone;
the second guide sleeve further comprises a fourth aperture configured to guide the second drill towards the bone; and
a first cutting diameter of the first drill is greater than a second cutting diameter of the second drill.
4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein:
the first guide sleeve further comprises a first bone contacting end opposite a first drill receiving end;
the second guide sleeve further comprises a second bone contacting end opposite a second drill receiving end; and
the first compression spring is proximate the first guide sleeve and the second compression spring is proximate the second guide sleeve;
wherein:
the first compression spring biases the first bone contacting end distally away from the foot portion; and
the second compression spring biases the second bone contacting end distally away from the foot portion.
5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first guide sleeve and the second guide sleeve are captive within the foot portion.
6 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a compression staple configured to be inserted into a first bone portion and a second bone portion, wherein the compression staple applies compression between the first bone portion and the second bone portion.
7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first guide sleeve comprises a first plurality of apertures, the second guide sleeve comprises a second plurality of apertures, and the drill guide is configured to guide the first drill into a plurality of locations on the bone without changing a position of the drill guide along the bone.
8 . A compression staple system for bone fixation, the system comprising:
a first drill configured to create a first hole in a bone;
a second drill configured to create a second hole in the bone; and
a drill guide comprising:
a handle;
a foot portion coupled to the handle;
a first guide sleeve captively and slidably received in the foot portion between a first position and a second position, the first guide sleeve comprising:
a first aperture configured to guide the first drill along a first trajectory; and
a second aperture configured to guide the second drill along a second trajectory; and
a second guide sleeve captively and slidably received in the foot portion between a third position and a fourth position and spaced apart from the first guide sleeve with the first guide sleeve received in the foot portion, the second guide sleeve comprising:
a third aperture configured to guide the first drill along a third trajectory; and
a fourth aperture configured to guide the second drill along a fourth trajectory;
wherein, with the first guide sleeve between the first position and the second position, and the second guide sleeve between the third position and the fourth position, the first trajectory, the second trajectory, the third trajectory, and the fourth trajectory are all parallel.

The system of claim 8 , wherein the first guide sleeve and the second guide sleeve comprise a first compression spring configured to bias the first guide sleeve away from the foot portion and towards the bone, and a second compression spring configured to bias the second guide sleeve away from the foot portion and towards the bone.
10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein:
the first guide sleeve further comprises a first bone contacting end opposite a first drill receiving end;
the second guide sleeve further comprises a second bone contacting end opposite a second drill receiving end; and
the drill guide comprises a first compression spring proximate the first guide sleeve and a second compression spring proximate the second guide sleeve;
wherein:
the first compression spring biases the first bone contacting end distally away from the foot portion; and
the second compression spring biases the second bone contacting end distally away from the foot portion.
11 . The system of claim 8 , wherein a first cutting diameter of the first drill is greater than a second cutting diameter of the second drill.
12 . The system of claim 8 , further comprising a compression staple configured to span a first bone portion and a second bone portion, wherein the compression staple applies compression between the first bone portion and the second bone portion.
13 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the first guide sleeve comprises a first plurality of apertures, the second guide sleeve comprises a second plurality of apertures, and the drill guide is configured to guide the first drill and the second drill into a plurality of locations on the bone without changing a position of the drill guide along the bone.
14 . A compression staple system for bone fixation, the system comprising:
a first drill configured to create a first hole in a bone; and
a drill guide comprising:
a handle;
a first guide sleeve configured to receive the first drill and comprising a first longitudinal axis and a first bone contacting end opposite a first drill receiving end;
a second guide sleeve configured to receive the first drill and comprising a second longitudinal axis and a second bone contacting end opposite a second drill receiving end; and
a foot portion coupled to the handle and configured to slidably receive the first guide sleeve and the second guide sleeve;
wherein:
the second guide sleeve is spaced apart from the first guide sleeve with the first guide sleeve and the second guide sleeve received in the foot portion;
the first guide sleeve comprises a plurality of first apertures, at least one of which is configured to receive the first drill;
the second guide sleeve comprises a plurality of second apertures, at least one of which is configured to receive the first drill; and
with the first bone contacting end and the second bone contacting end engaged with the bone, the first longitudinal axis and the second longitudinal axis are parallel regardless of an angle between the first longitudinal axis and the bone.
15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the first guide sleeve and the second guide sleeve are captive within the foot portion.
16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the first guide sleeve comprises a first compression spring configured to bias the first guide sleeve away from the foot portion and towards the bone, and the second guide sleeve comprises a second compression spring configured to bias the second guide sleeve away from the foot portion and towards the bone.
17 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the drill guide further comprises a first compression spring proximate the first guide sleeve and a second compression spring proximate the second guide sleeve;
wherein:
the first compression spring biases the first bone contacting end distally away from the foot portion; and
the second compression spring biases the second bone contacting end distally away from the foot portion.
18 . The system of claim 14 , further comprising a compression staple configured to be inserted into a first bone portion and a second bone portion, wherein the compression staple applies compression between the first bone portion and the second bone portion.
19 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the drill guide is configured to guide the first drill into a plurality of locations on the bone without changing a position of the drill guide along the bone.
20 . The system of claim 14 , further comprising a second drill configured to create a second hole in the bone, wherein:
the first guide sleeve is further configured to receive the second drill;
the second guide sleeve is further configured to receive the second drill; and
a first cutting diameter of the first drill is greater than a second cutting diameter of the second drill.
