Abstract

A method of reducing risk of bladder tumor recurrence, progression or death, or a method of increasing probability of disease-free survival at 15 months post-treatment, or a method of increasing probability of maintaining an achieved complete response for at least 15 months post-treatment comprises administering to a patient in need thereof a thermally gelling pharmaceutical composition once weekly for six weeks, the patient having low-grade intermediate-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, and the thermally gelling pharmaceutical composition comprising a reverse thermal gelation agent, a polymer, and mitomycin. The risk is reduced or the probability is increased in comparison to the risk or probability expected if the patient were instead to receive TURBT monotherapy as treatment.

Claims (8)

1 . A method of increasing probability of maintaining an achieved complete response for at least 15 months post-treatment initiation comprising the step of:

administering to a patient in need thereof nonsurgical primary chemoablation with a thermally gelling pharmaceutical composition comprising 75 mg of mitomycin once weekly for six weeks,

wherein the patient in need thereof has recurrent low-grade intermediate-risk non- muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC),

wherein the patient in need thereof had a previous episode of low-grade NMIBC that was treated with transurethral resection of bladder cancer (TURBT), and

wherein the thermally gelling pharmaceutical composition was prepared by mixing a composition comprising mitomycin together with a thermoreversible hydrogel comprising about 27% (w/w) Poloxamer 407 and about 0.18% (w/w) hydroxypropylmethylcellulose based on a total weight of the thermoreversible hydrogel.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the recurrent low-grade intermediate-risk NMIBC is diagnosed using cold cup biopsy.

3 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the previous episode of low-grade NMIBC that was treated with TURBT occurred within one year of the administering step.

4 . The method according to claim 2 , wherein the previous episode of low-grade NMIBC that was treated with TURBT occurred within one year of the administering step.
