Abstract

The exemplary embodiments may detect the changed ambient air pressure and may adjust settings for the medicament delivery device to compensate for the changed ambient air pressure. The exemplary embodiments may detect the changed ambient air pressure and may adjust settings for the medicament delivery device to compensate for the changed ambient air pressure. Based on the detection of these events, the medicament delivery device may be switched into a flight mode. In the flight mode, medicament boluses may be reduced to nominal dosages, basal delivery rates may be modified and sample periods for sensors, like glucose monitors, may be shortened to sample sensor values more frequently. The exemplary embodiments may prohibit delivery of medicament during times of changing ambient air pressure to avoid over-delivering or under-delivering the medicament due to the ambient air pressure level.

Claims (38)

1 . A method performed by a processor of an electronic device, comprising:

determining with the processor that a user of a medicament delivery device is on an airplane flight;

responsive to the determining with the processor, switching from a normal mode basal delivery rate of a medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device for when the user is not on the airplane flight to a flight mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device, which is different from the normal mode basal delivery rate, when the user is on the airplane flight, to adapt for at least one environmental condition due to the user being on the airplane flight;

detecting that the airplane flight has landed; and

responsive to the detecting that the airplane flight has landed, switching from the flight mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device to a cool off mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device, which is different from the normal mode basal delivery rate and the flight mode basal delivery rate, for a cool off period to aid in transition back to the normal mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one environmental condition includes a reduced air pressure, and a bolus dosage of the medicament delivered by the medicament delivery device while operating at the flight mode basal delivery rate is less than a bolus dosage of the medication delivered by the medicament delivery device while operating at the normal mode basal delivery rate, responsive to the reduced air pressure.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one environmental condition includes a reduced air pressure and wherein the flight mode basal delivery rate is less than the normal mode basal delivery rate responsive to the reduced air pressure.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the rate of delivery is reduced to suspend delivery of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the medicament is insulin.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises displaying a request for the user to confirm that the user is on the airplane flight and wherein the determining is based on receiving a response to the request where the response confirms that the user is on the airplane flight.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the medicament delivery device also is configured to deliver boluses of medicament to the user.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining is based on one or more of global positioning system (GPS) data, measurements by an accelerometer in the electronic device, an entry in an electronic calendar of the user, one or more pressure readings or network identification information for a network that is accessible to the electronic device.

9 . A non-transitory storage medium storing computer programming instructions that when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform the following:

determine that a user of a medicament delivery device is on an airplane flight;

responsive to the determining that the user is on the airplane flight, switch from a normal mode basal delivery rate of a medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device for when the user is not on the airplane flight to a flight mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device, which is different from the normal mode basal delivery rate, when the user is on the airplane flight to adapt for at least one environmental condition due to the user being on the airplane flight;

detect that the airplane flight has landed; and

responsive to the detecting that the airplane flight has landed, switch from the flight mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device to a cool off mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device, which is different from the normal mode basal delivery rate and the flight mode basal delivery rate, for a cool off period to aid in transition back to the normal mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user.

10 . The non-transitory storage medium of claim 9 , wherein executing the computer programming instructions causes the processor to maintain the cool off mode for 1 to 7 days after the airplane flight has landed.

11 . The non-transitory storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the cool off mode basal delivery rate during the cool off period is an average basal delivery rate during the airplane flight.

12 . The non-transitory storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the at least one environmental condition includes a reduced air pressure, and a bolus dosage of the medicament delivered by the medicament delivery device while operating at the flight mode basal delivery rate is less than a bolus dosage of the medication delivered by the medicament delivery device while operating at the normal mode basal deliver rate, responsive to the reduced air pressure.

13 . The non-transitory storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the determining is based on one or more of global positioning system (GPS) data, measurements by an accelerometer in an electronic device comprising the non-transitory storage medium and the processor, an entry in an electronic calendar of the user, one or more pressure readings or network identification information for a network that is accessible to the electronic device.

14 . The non-transitory storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the computer programming instructions further contain instructions, that when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

determine whether the airplane flight has traversed multiple time zones; and

perform the switching to the cool off mode basal delivery rate only if it is determined that the airplane flight traversed multiple time zones.

15 . A medicament delivery system, comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium storing computer programming instructions;

a processor configured to execute the computer programming instructions to cause the processor to:

determine that a user of a medicament delivery device is on an airplane flight;

responsive to the determining that the user is on the airplane flight, switch from a normal mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device for when the user is not on the airline flight to a flight mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device, which is different from the normal mode basal delivery rate of the medicament, when the user is on the airplane flight to adapt for at least one environmental condition due to the user being on the airplane flight;

detect that the airplane flight has landed; and

responsive to the detecting that the airplane flight has landed, switch from the flight mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device to a cool off mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user by the medicament delivery device, which is different from the normal mode basal delivery rate and the flight mode basal delivery rate, for a cool off period to aid in transition to the normal mode basal delivery rate of the medicament to the user.

16 . The medicament delivery system of claim 15 , wherein the cool off mode basal delivery rate is maintained for the cool off period of 1 to 7 days after the airplane flight has landed.

17 . The medicament delivery system of claim 15 , wherein the cool off mode basal delivery rate during the cool off period is an average basal delivery rate during the airplane flight.

18 . The medicament delivery system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one environmental condition includes a reduced air pressure, and wherein a bolus dosage of the medicament delivered by the medicament delivery device while operating at the flight mode basal delivery rate is less than a bolus dosage of the medication delivered by the medicament delivery device while operating at the normal mode basal deliver rate, responsive to the reduced air pressure.

19 . The medicament delivery system of claim 15 , wherein the determining is based on one or more of global positioning system (GPS) data, measurements by an accelerometer in an electronic device of the medicament delivery system, an entry in an electronic calendar of the user, one or more pressure readings or network identification information for a network that is accessible to the electronic device.

20 . The medicament delivery system of claim 15 , wherein executing the computer programming instructions further causes the processor to:
