Sports equipment with alterable characteristic
Articles of sports equipment, such as striking implements (e.g., sticks) and wearable articles (e.g., skates, helmets) for playing hockey or other activities, in which at least one of the characteristics (e.g., stiffness) of the articles of sports equipment is adaptable and can be altered during use of the sports equipment, such as by comprising an alterable component coupled to a controller, by comprising an alterable component that is autonomously alterable, and/or by an alterable component that can be altered in response to a command of a remote device.
1 . An article of sports equipment configured to be held or worn by a user during a sport and cause a component of the article of sports equipment to switch between a first mode and a second mode in response to a change of movement of the article of sports equipment initiated by the user, wherein the article of sports equipment is a skate, and the component includes a runner of the skate, wherein the first mode includes a first profile of the runner, and the second mode includes a second profile of the runner.
2 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , further comprising:
a sensor configured to output an electronic signal which represents the movement of the article of sports equipment; and
a processing entity configured to process the electronic signal to determine the change of movement;
wherein the component of the article of sports equipment is caused to switch from the first mode to the second mode based on the determined change of movement.

The article of sports equipment of claim 2 , wherein the sensor includes at least one of a gyroscope and a pressure sensor; wherein the processing entity is configured to process the electronic signal to determine that the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is a change of turning motion; and wherein the component is caused to switch from the first mode to the second mode in response to the change of turning motion.
4 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein the first profile is more curved than the second profile.
5 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein the first profile is more parabolic than the second profile.
6 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein the component further includes an actuator caused to deform the runner to switch from the first mode to the second mode.

The article of sports equipment of claim 2 , wherein the sensor includes at least one force sensor; wherein the processing entity is configured to process the electronic signal to determine that the change in movement is a changed in a forward skating movement pattern; and wherein the component is caused to switch from the first mode to the second mode in response to the change in forward skating movement pattern.
8 . The article of sports equipment of claim 7 , wherein the first mode has a more aggressive runner pitch than the second mode.
9 . The article of sports equipment of claim 2 , wherein the sensor includes at least one force sensor; wherein the processing entity is configured to process the electronic signal to determine that the movement of article sports equipment is changed from a rest situation to a dynamic situation; and wherein the component is caused to switch from the first mode to the second mode.
10 . The article of sports equipment of claim 9 , wherein the component further includes a suspension portion of the skate.
11 . The article of sports equipment of claim 10 , wherein the first mode includes a first stiffness of the suspension portion of the skate, and the second mode includes a second stiffness of the suspension portion of the skate, the first stiffness being different from the second stiffness.

The article of sports equipment of claim 2 , wherein the sensor includes at least one accelerometer; wherein the processing entity configured to process the electronic signal to determine that the change in movement is a change from a high-speed situation to a low-speed situation; and wherein the component is caused to switch from the first mode to the second mode in response to the change from a high-speed situation to a low-speed situation.
13 . The article of sports equipment of claim 12 , wherein the component further includes a tongue of the skate, wherein in the first mode the tongue has a first stiffness, and wherein in the second mode the tongue has a second stiffness different from the first stiffness.

The article of sports equipment of claim 12 , wherein the component includes a blade of the skate, wherein in the first mode the blade has a first pitch indicating a first angle in which the blade leans towards an ice, and wherein in the second mode the blade has a second pitch indicating a second angle in which the blade leans towards the ice, the second angle being different from the first angle.

The article of sports equipment of claim 2 , wherein the sensor includes at least one pressure sensor; wherein the processing entity is configured to process the electronic signal to determine that the movement of article sports equipment is changed from a slap shot movement pattern to a wrist shot movement pattern; and wherein the component is caused to switch from the first mode to the second mode.
16 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by a turning motion of the user.
17 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by a forward or backward motion of the user.
18 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by a striking motion of the user.
19 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by a shooting motion of the user.
20 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by at least one of a turning motion of the user, a forward or backward motion of the user, a striking motion of the user, and a shooting motion of the user.
21 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by at least two of a turning motion of the user, a forward or backward motion of the user, a striking motion of the user, and a shooting motion of the user.
22 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein a stiffness of the component of the article of sports equipment is alterable such that the stiffness of the component in the first mode is different from the stiffness of the component of the article of sports equipment in the second mode.
23 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein a geometry of the component is alterable such that the geometry of the component in the first mode is different from the geometry of the component in the second mode.
24 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein a hardness of the component is alterable such that the hardness of the component in the first mode is different from the hardness of the component in the second mode.
25 . The article of sports equipment of claim 1 , wherein a resilience of the component is alterable such that the resilience of the component in the first mode is different from the resilience of the component in the second mode.
26 . An article of sports equipment configured to be held or worn by a user during a sport and cause a component of the article of sports equipment to switch between a first mode and a second mode in response to a change of movement of the article of sports equipment initiated by the user, wherein the article of sports equipment is a ski, and the component includes a base of the ski, wherein the first mode includes a first profile of the base, and the second mode includes a second profile of the base.
27 . The article of sports equipment of claim 26 , wherein the second profile is more parabolic than the first profile.
28 . An article of sports equipment configured to be held or worn by a user during a sport and cause a component of the article of sports equipment to switch among at least three modes in response to a change of movement of the article of sports equipment initiated by the user, wherein the at least three modes including a first mode, a second mode, and a third mode, the change of the movement corresponding to a respective one of at least three movement patterns.
29 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 , further comprising:
a sensor configured to output an electronic signal which represents the movement of the article of sports equipment; and
a processing entity configured to process the electronic signal to determine the change of movement;
wherein the component of the article of sports equipment is caused to switch among at least three modes based on the determined change of movement.

The article of sports equipment of claim 29 , wherein the sensor includes at least one of a gyroscope and a pressure sensor; wherein the processing entity is configured to process the electronic signal to determine that the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is a change of turning motion; and wherein the component is caused to switch among at least three modes in response to the change of turning motion.
31 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 , wherein the component further includes an actuator caused to deform the component of the article of sports to switch among at least three modes.
32 . The article of sports equipment of claim 29 , wherein the sensor includes at least one force sensor; wherein the processing entity is configured to process the electronic signal to determine that the movement of article sports equipment is changed from a rest situation to a dynamic situation; and wherein the component is caused to switch among at least three modes.
33 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 being a skate, wherein the component includes a suspension portion of the skate.
34 . The article of sports equipment of claim 29 , wherein the sensor includes at least one accelerometer; wherein the processing entity configured to process the electronic signal to determine that the change in movement is a change from a high-speed situation to a low- speed situation; and wherein the component is caused to switch from the first mode to the second mode in response to the change from a high-speed situation to a low-speed situation.

The article of sports equipment of claim 28 being a skate, wherein the component includes a tongue of the skate, wherein in the first mode the tongue has a first stiffness, in the second mode the tongue has a second stiffness, and in the third mode the tongue has a third stiffness, the first stiffness, the second stiffness, and the third stiffness are different.

The article of sports equipment of claim 28 being a skate, wherein the component includes a blade of the skate, wherein in the first mode the blade has a first pitch indicating a first angle in which the blade leans towards an ice, in the second mode the blade has a second pitch indicating a second angle in which the blade leans towards the ice, and in the third mode the blade has a third pitch indicating a third angle in which the blade leans towards the ice, and the first, second, and third angle being different with respect to each other.
37 . The article of sports equipment of claim 29 , wherein the sensor includes at least one pressure sensor; wherein the processing entity is configured to process the electronic signal to determine that the movement of article sports equipment is changed from a slap shot movement pattern to a wrist shot movement pattern; and wherein the component is caused to switch from the first mode to the second mode.
38 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by a turning motion of the user.
39 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by a forward or backward motion of the user.
40 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by a striking motion of the user.
41 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 , wherein the change of movement of the article of sports equipment is initiated by a shooting motion of the user.
42 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 , wherein a stiffness of the component is alterable such that the stiffness of the component in the first mode, the stiffness of the component in the second mode, and the stiffness of the component in the third mode are different.
43 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 , wherein a geometry of the component is alterable such that the geometry of the component in the first mode, the geometry of the component in the second mode, and the geometry of the component in the third mode are different.
44 . The article of sports equipment of claim 28 , wherein a hardness of the component is alterable such that the hardness of the component in the first mode, the hardness of the component in the second mode, and the hardness of the component in the third mode are different.
45 . An article of sports equipment configured to be held or worn by a user during a sport and cause a component of the article of sports equipment to switch between a first mode and a second mode in response to a change of movement of the article of sports equipment initiated by the user, wherein the article of sports equipment is a ski boot, wherein in the first mode a binding of the ski boot is shifted to a first angle, and in the second mode the binding of the ski boot is shifted to a second angle different from the first angle.
