Abstract

Knob on display (KoD) devices and related systems, methods, and devices are disclosed. A KoD device includes at least one electrode including an electrically conductive material. The KoD device also includes a base assembly configured to be positioned between a touch screen of a touch screen device and the at least one electrode. The at least one electrode is configured to be positioned in engagement proximity to a touch sensor of the touch screen device through the base assembly.

Claims (54)

1 . A knob on display device, comprising:

a conductive cap, the conductive cap at a top of the knob on display device;

a base assembly, the base assembly at a bottom of the knob on display device;

an inner housing, the inner housing between the conductive cap and the base assembly, the inner housing enabled to rotate about a post within the base assembly; and

at least one electrode comprising an electrically conductive material, the at least one electrode including an electrode electrically connected to the touch surface of the conductive cap via the dome switch and the one or more dome switch pads, the electrode mechanically coupled to the inner housing to rotate with the inner housing.

2 . The knob on display device of claim 1 , wherein:

a bottom side of the base assembly to mount to a touch screen of a touch screen device, so that the electrode is positioned in engagement proximity to the touch screen of the touch screen device through the base assembly.

3 . The knob on display device of claim 2 , comprising:

an adhesive applied to the bottom side of the base assembly to secure the knob on display device to the touch screen.

4 . The knob on display device of claim 2 , wherein the base assembly has a thickness of 0.5 millimeters or less through which the electrode is positioned in engagement proximity to the touch screen.

5 . The knob on display device of claim 1 , wherein the base assembly includes: one or more side walls extending toward the conductive cap.

6 . The knob on display device of claim 5 , comprising:

one or more seals between the one or more side walls of the base assembly and the conductive cap.

7 . The knob on display device of claim 1 , wherein the conductive cap, the dome switch, and the printed circuit including the conductive pads are to rotate with the inner housing responsive to a rotation of the conductive cap.

8 . The knob on display device of claim 7 , comprising:

a bearing coupled to the inner housing; and

the post coupled to the bearing to enable the inner housing and the electrode to rotate about the post.

9 . The knob on display device of claim 8 , comprising:

detents of the base assembly; and

one or more detent actuators of the inner housing, the one or more detent actuators to provide mechanical resistance to rotation of the inner housing about the post.

10 . The knob on display device of claim 1 , wherein:

the conductive pads include a push contact underneath the dome switch;

the one or more electrodes include an additional electrode, the additional electrode electrically connected to the push contact, the additional electrode mechanically coupled to the inner housing to rotate with the inner housing;

the dome switch is electrically connected to the push contact so that the touch surface is electrically connected to the additional electrode responsive to a depressed position of the touch surface; and

the touch surface is electrically isolated from the additional electrode responsive to a released position of the touch surface.

11 . The knob on display device of claim 1 , wherein the printed circuit including the conductive pads comprises a printed circuit board (PCB).

12 . The knob on display device of claim 1 , wherein the printed circuit including the conductive pads comprises a flexible printed circuit, the flexible printed circuit being folded to enable a portion thereof to lay flat relative to the touch surface.

13 . A knob on display system comprising:

a touch screen device comprising a touch sensor and a touch screen; and

a knob on display device comprising:

a conductive cap, the conductive cap at a top of the knob on display device;

a dome switch, the dome switch under the conductive cap, the dome switch electrically connected to a touch surface of the conductive cap;

a printed circuit including conductive pads, the conductive pads including one or more dome switch pads, the dome switch mounted on the one or more dome switch pads;

a base assembly, the base assembly at a bottom of the knob on display device;

an inner housing, the inner housing between the conductive cap and the base assembly, the inner housing enabled to rotate about a post within the base assembly;

at least one electrode comprising an electrically conductive material, the at least one electrode including an electrode electrically connected to the touch surface of the conductive cap via the dome switch and the one or more dome switch pads, the electrode mechanically coupled to the inner housing to rotate with the inner housing; and

a bottom side of the base assembly secured to the touch screen of the touch screen device, so that the electrode is positioned in engagement proximity to the touch screen through the base assembly.

14 . The knob on display system of claim 13 , wherein the bottom side of the base assembly is secured to the touch screen using an adhesive.

15 . The knob on display system of claim 14 , wherein the adhesive spans at least substantially an entire surface of the bottom side of the base assembly.

16 . The knob on display system of claim 15 , wherein the conductive cap, the dome switch, and the printed circuit including the conductive pads are to rotate with the inner housing responsive to a rotation of the conductive cap.
