Abstract

A system and method for providing updates to medical devices is disclosed. In one example, the medical devices are configured to pull update files in response to the reception of an update message from a server. Once the update files are downloaded by a medical device, the update files can be installed. While the medical device pulls the update files, the medical device can continue with its normal operation. If desired, a user can select which medical devices should be updated, based on any desired factors, such as the physical location of the device, the model of the device, the type of device, and the way the device is being used.

Claims (49)

1 . An infusion pump configured to administer medication to a patient, the infusion pump comprising:

a display screen comprising a user interface configured to permit a user to monitor and operate the infusion pump; and

one or more memory storage locations;

said infusion pump configured to enable:

downloading, wirelessly, one or more update files for a drug library from a remote server, the drug library comprising information about drug dosing rate and volume, and the downloading being pulled by the infusion pump such that after receiving a location of the one or more update files on the remote server, the infusion pump controls the downloading of the one or more update files;

storing the one or more update files in the one or more memory storage locations of the infusion pump while the infusion pump is administering medication to a patient, without affecting normal operation of the infusion pump; and

waiting for an update time when the one or more update files can be installed, wherein the installation of the one or more update files requires receiving an acceptance of the installation from a user through the user interface.

The infusion pump of claim 1 , wherein the installation of the one or more update files includes changing a status of the one or more memory storage locations of the one of more update files to become an active drug library memory location and changing the status of another one or more memory locations to be where a subsequent update can be stored.

3 . The infusion pump of claim 1 , wherein the infusion pump is further configured to enable:

determining a state of the infusion pump, wherein the state includes at least one of administering an infusion to a patient or after receiving a power-down command for the infusion pump; and

determining the update time based on the determined state of the infusion pump.

4 . The infusion pump of claim 1 , wherein the infusion pump is further configured to download one or more update files for operating software.

5 . The infusion pump of claim 1 , wherein the one or more update files are encrypted in such a way that the infusion pump is able to decrypt the one or more update files after the one or more update files are downloaded.

6 . The infusion pump of claim 1 , wherein the infusion pump is further configured to enable providing a status update for the installation to the remote server.

7 . The infusion pump of claim 1 , wherein the infusion pump is further configured to enable displaying a status update for the installation on the display screen.

8 . The infusion pump of claim 1 , wherein the installation is independently powered from an infusion subsystem.

9 . An infusion pump configured to administer medication to a patient, the infusion pump comprising:

a display screen comprising a user interface configured to permit a user to monitor and operate the infusion pump; and

one or more memory storage locations;

said infusion pump configured to enable:

downloading, wirelessly, one or more update files for a drug library from a remote server, the drug library comprising information about drug dosing rate and volume, and the downloading being pulled by the infusion pump such that after receiving a location of the one or more update files on the remote server, the infusion pump controls the downloading of the one or more update files;

storing the one or more update files in the one or more memory storage locations of the infusion pump while the infusion pump is administering medication to a patient, without affecting normal operation of the infusion pump; and

waiting for an update time when the one or more update files can be installed, wherein the installation of the one or more update files does not require assent of the user.

The infusion pump of claim 9 , wherein the installation of the one or more update files includes changing a status of the one or more memory storage locations of the one of more update files to become an active drug library memory location and changing the status of another one or more memory locations to be where a subsequent update can be stored.

11 . The infusion pump of claim 9 , wherein the infusion pump is further configured to enable:

determining a state of the infusion pump, wherein the state includes at least one of administering an infusion to a patient or after receiving a power-down command for the infusion pump; and

determining the update time based on the determined state of the infusion pump.

12 . The infusion pump of claim 9 , wherein the one or more update files includes an update for operating software.

13 . The infusion pump of claim 9 , wherein the one or more update files are encrypted in such a way that the infusion pump is able to decrypt the one or more update files after the one or more update files are downloaded.

14 . The infusion pump of claim 9 , wherein the infusion pump is further configured to enable providing a status update for the installation to the remote server.

15 . The infusion pump of claim 9 , wherein the infusion pump is further configured to enable displaying a status update for the installation on the display screen.

16 . The infusion pump of claim 9 , wherein the installation is independently powered from an infusion subsystem.

17 . An infusion pump configured to administer medication to a patient, the infusion pump comprising:

a display screen comprising a user interface configured to permit a user to monitor and operate the infusion pump; and

one or more memory storage locations;

said infusion pump configured to enable:

downloading, wirelessly, one or more update files for a drug library from a remote server, the drug library comprising information about drug dosing rate and volume, and the downloading being pulled by the infusion pump such that after receiving a location of the one or more update files on the remote server, the infusion pump controls the downloading of the one or more update files;

storing the one or more update files in the one or more memory storage locations of the infusion pump while the infusion pump is administering medication to a patient, without affecting normal operation of the infusion pump; and

waiting for an update time when the one or more update files can be installed when the infusion pump is powered off, with or without requiring acceptance by the user.

18 . The infusion pump of claim 17 , wherein said powering off the infusion pump comprises powering off an infusion subsystem, wherein the installation is independently powered to install the one or more update files while the infusion subsystem is powered off.

19 . An infusion pump configured to administer medication to a patient, the infusion pump comprising:

a display screen comprising a user interface configured to permit a user to monitor and operate the infusion pump; and

one or more memory storage locations;

said infusion pump configured to enable:

downloading, wirelessly, one or more update files for a drug library from a remote server, the drug library comprising information about drug dosing rate and volume, and the downloading being pulled by the infusion pump such that after receiving a location of the one or more update files on the remote server, the infusion pump controls the downloading of the one or more update files;

storing the one or more update files in the one or more memory storage locations of the infusion pump while the infusion pump is administering medication to a patient, without affecting normal operation of the infusion pump; and

waiting for an update time when the one or more update files can be installed.

20 . The infusion pump of claim 19 , wherein the one or more update files are encrypted.

21 . The infusion pump of claim 19 , wherein the installation of the one or more update files includes changing a status of the one or more memory storage locations of the one of more update files to become an active drug library memory location and changing the status of another one or more memory locations to be where a subsequent update can be stored.
