Recovery record for updating a system configuration

1. A recovery record stored in memory comprising:

memory allocation information embodied in a computer readable medium and defining resultant data that is prospectively associated with a change in a system configuration of memory allocation of a memory space corresponding to a pending allocation request; and

a completion indicator embodied in a computer readable medium and comprising a first value when the memory allocation information is included in the system configuration and comprising a second value when the memory allocation information is not included in the system configuration.

2. The recovery record of claim 1 wherein the memory allocation information defines a portion of a memory allocation map representing a plurality of allocatable data storage units when the memory allocation information is included in the system configuration.

3. The recovery record of claim 2 wherein the memory allocation information indicates an availability of a respective data storage unit for allocation.

4. The recovery record of claim 2 wherein the memory allocation information further indicates a number of data storage units available for allocation.

5. The recovery record of claim 2 wherein the memory allocation map comprises a first zone and a second zone and wherein the memory allocation information indicates an availability of data storage units with respect to the zones.

6. The recovery record of claim 2 wherein the memory allocation information specifies an allocatable data storage unit assignment to a logical device.

7. The recovery record of claim 1 comprising memory allocation information adapted for idempotent update of the system configuration to include the memory allocation information.

8. A method comprising:

storing memory allocation information defining resultant data that is prospectively associated with a change in a system configuration of memory allocation of a memory space corresponding to a pending allocation request; and

storing a first value to a completion indicator indicating that the memory allocation information is not included in the system configuration.

9. The method of claim 8 comprising:

updating the system configuration to include the memory allocation information; and

storing a second value different than the first value to the completion indicator indicating the memory allocation information is included in the system configuration.

10. The method of claim 8 comprising storing a copy of the memory allocation information in the memory space.

11. The method of claim 10 comprising mirroring the copy in write back cache.

12. The method of claim 8 comprising indicating with the memory allocation information an availability of a data storage unit for allocation.

13. The method of claim 9 wherein the updating step is characterized as idempotent.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein the system configuration comprises a first zone and a second zone, and wherein the storing step comprises storing an availability of data storage units with respect to the zones.

15. A data storage system comprising:

system configuration change information embodied in a computer readable medium and including resultant data that is prospectively associated with a change in a system configuration of memory allocation of a memory space corresponding to a pending allocation request; and

means for updating the system configuration of memory allocation by saving the prospective system configuration change information before executing the pending allocation request.
