Abstract

A system and method for deploying an occluding device that can be used to remodel an aneurysm within the vessel by, for example, neck reconstruction or balloon remodeling. The system comprises an introducer sheath and an assembly for carrying the occluding device. The assembly includes an elongated flexible member having an occluding device retaining member for receiving a first end of the occluding device, a proximally positioned retaining member for engaging a second end of the occluding device and a support surrounding a portion of the elongated flexible member over which the occluding device can be positioned.

Claims (34)

1. A system for delivering and deploying a self-expanding device, said system comprising:

a sheath;

a self-expanding device; and

an assembly configured to move the self-expanding device, the assembly comprising an elongate flexible member including a distal retaining member receiving a distal end of the self-expanding device, the distal retaining member rotatably configured to release the distal end of the self-expanding device from within the distal retaining member and away from the elongate flexible member via a rotary force applied to a proximal end portion of the elongate flexible member so as to rotate the distal retaining member about its longitudinal axis with respect to the sheath, said sheath being removable, prior to applying said rotary force, while the distal end of said self-expanding device remains engaged with the distal retaining member, wherein the distal retaining member comprises a protective coil.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the distal retaining member includes an internal recess configured to receive and hold the distal end of the self-expanding device prior to deployment of said self-expanding device via said rotary motion of the elongate flexible member and wherein the distal retaining member is fixed to the flexible member.

3. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a catheter, the assembly and the self-expanding device positioned in the catheter.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the distal retaining member includes a portion configured to protect the distal end of the self-expanding device.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the protective coil receives the distal end of the self-expanding device within an interior of the protective coil.

6. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a proximally positioned retaining member configured to engage a second end of the self-expanding device, wherein the proximally positioned retaining member includes a biasing member that urges the self-expanding device toward a distal end of the flexible member.

7. The system according to claim 6 , wherein the proximally positioned retaining member includes a portion of the flexible member.

8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the self-expanding device is a stent.

9. The system according to claim 8 , wherein the stent is a woven, porous stent.

10. The system according to claim 8 , wherein the stent is a self-expanding stent.

11. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said elongate flexible member includes a guidewire having a flexible atraumatic tip.

12. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said guidewire is movable longitudinally relative to said sheath.

13. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said guidewire has at least two sections having different diameters.

14. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said guidewire has sections of differing flexions.

15. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a support extending along a portion of the flexible member and having an outer surface configured to engage an inner surface of the self-expanding device.

16. The system according to claim 15 , wherein the support surrounds a portion of the flexible member.

17. The system according to claim 15 , wherein the support comprises an elongated coil.

18. The system according to claim 15 , wherein the self-expanding device is movable relative to the support.

19. The system according to claim 15 , wherein the distal retaining member has an outer surface that extends farther from an outer surface of the flexible member than an outer surface of the support.

20. A system for delivering and deploying a self-expanding device, the system comprising:

a sheath;

a self-expanding device;

an assembly configured to move the self-expanding device, the assembly comprising an elongate flexible member including a self-expanding device retaining member receiving a distal end of the self-expanding device, the distal retaining member rotatably configured to release the distal end of the self-expanding device from within the distal retaining member and away from the elongate flexible member via a rotary force applied to a proximal end portion of the elongate flexible member so as to rotate the distal retaining member about its longitudinal axis with respect to the sheath, the sheath being removable, prior to applying the rotary force, while the distal end of the self-expanding device remains engaged with the distal retaining member; and

a support extending along and surrounding a portion of the flexible member and having an outer surface configured to engage an inner surface of the self-expanding device.

21. The system according to claim 20 , wherein the support comprises an elongated coil.

22. The system according to claim 20 , wherein the self-expanding device is movable relative to the support.

23. The system according to claim 20 , wherein the distal retaining member has an outer surface that extends farther from an outer surface of the flexible member than an outer surface of the support.

24. The system according to claim 20 , wherein the self-expanding device is a stent.

25. The system according to claim 20 , wherein the distal retaining member comprises a protective coil.

26. The system according to claim 20 , further comprising a proximally positioned retaining member configured to engage a second end of the self-expanding device, wherein the proximally positioned retaining member includes a biasing member that urges the self-expanding device toward a distal end of the flexible member.

27. The system according to claim 26 , wherein the proximally positioned retaining member includes a portion of the flexible member.
