Abstract

An earphone includes a first acoustic chamber having a reactive element and a resistive element in a parallel configuration, a second acoustic chamber separated from the first acoustic chamber by an acoustic transducer and including a unitary port to provide both pressure equalization of the second chamber and equalization of the earphone to a predetermined frequency response, and a housing to support the apparatus from the concha of a wearer's ear and to extend the second acoustic chamber into the ear canal of the wearer's ear.

7. The headphone of claim 1 further comprising a cushion removably attached to the housing, wherein the cushion at least partially couples the earphone to the wearer's ear.

8. The headphone of claim 7 wherein the cushion extends over the nozzle of the housing.

9. The headphone of claim 1 wherein the first reactive port and the first resistive port reduce pressure variation on a face of the sound-radiating surface of the acoustic transducer exposed to the first acoustic chamber as compared to an otherwise-identical earphone lacking the first reactive port and first resistive port.

10. A headphone comprising:

an acoustic transducer;

a housing enclosing the acoustic transducer;

a first acoustic chamber defined by a first side of the acoustic transducer and a first portion of the housing, the first acoustic chamber including a first reactive port and a first resistive port in a parallel configuration to couple the first chamber with space outside the earphone; and

a second acoustic chamber defined by a second side of the acoustic transducer and a second portion of the housing, the second acoustic chamber separated from the first acoustic chamber by the acoustic transducer and including an opening coupling the second acoustic chamber to the wearer's ear canal; and

a nozzle having an opening coupling the second acoustic chamber to the wearer's ear canal and extending the second acoustic chamber at least partially into the ear canal; wherein

the first reactive port produces an acoustical reactive effect in the frequency response of the headphone that is greater than any acoustical resistive effect produced by the first reactive port in the frequency response over a frequency range below about 100 Hz as measured in the ear canal.

11. The headphone of claim 10 wherein the acoustic transducer comprises a sound-radiating surface that moves along a first axis, and the nozzle extends the second acoustic chamber along a second axis that is not parallel to the first axis.

12. The headphone of claim 10 wherein the first reactive port comprises an elongated tube, a first opening of the tube being open to the first acoustic chamber, and a second opening of the tube acoustically coupled to space outside the earphone.

15. A headphone device comprising:

a pair of earphones, each earphone comprising:

an acoustic transducer having a sound-radiating surface that moves along a first axis;

a housing enclosing the acoustic transducer;

a first acoustic chamber defined by a first side of the acoustic transducer and a first portion of the housing, the first acoustic chamber including a first reactive port and a first resistive port in a parallel configuration to couple the first chamber with space outside the earphone;

a nozzle having an opening coupling the second acoustic chamber to the wearer's ear canal and extending the second acoustic chamber at least partially into the ear canal along a second axis that is not parallel to the first axis;

a plug for connecting the pair of earphones to an external device that supplies audio signals;

a cord for delivering the audio signal supplied by the external device via the plug to the acoustic transducer in each earphone; and

a circuit housing affixed to the cord and located between the plug and the pair of earphones, the circuit housing including circuitry for controlling the volume of the audio signal supplied by the external device.

16. The headphone of claim 15 wherein the second axis is substantially perpendicular to the first axis.
