Abstract

A system for electrically stimulating a user comprising: a first housing portion defining an array of openings; an array of permeable bodies with portions exposed through the array of openings and wetted with a solution that facilitates electrical coupling between the system and a body region of the user, wherein each permeable body has a cavity at a proximal portion and a distal portion and is configured to transmit the solution to the body region of the user; a substrate region defining an array of protrusions configured to support the array of permeable bodies and composed of a conductive polymer; and a set of conductors in communication with the substrate region and including a first conductor that provides a first subset of the array of permeable bodies with a first polarity and a second conductor that provides a second subset of the array of permeable bodies with a second polarity.

wherein the first subset forms a first rectangular subarray, the second subset forms a second rectangular subarray adjacent a first side of the first rectangular subarray, and the third subset forms a third rectangular subarray adjacent a second side of the first rectangular subarray.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the array of permeable bodies is treated with an electrolyte that facilitates electrical coupling between the system and a body region of the user during use.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein each of the array of permeable bodies is impregnated with a dried electrolyte component, and configured to be saturated with fluid prior to use by the user in forming an electrically conductive interface with the user.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the conductive substrate region is composed of a conductive polymer.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein a base region of each opening of the array of openings of the first housing portion is recessed at the broad surface, such that the base region of each opening defines a bowl about its corresponding opening.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the array of permeable bodies, both configured to have identical polarities, are of unitary construction with each other.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the array of permeable bodies has a cavity at a proximal portion and a tapered distal portion, and wherein the protrusions of the substrate region correspond to and are configured to reside within cavities of the array of permeable bodies.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the array of permeable bodies is composed of an olefin polymer matrix.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the conductive substrate region comprises a first subregion coupled to the first subset of the array of permeable bodies and a second subregion coupled to both the second subset and the third subset of the array of permeable bodies, wherein the first subregion of the conductive substrate region is separated from the second subregion of the conductive substrate region by an insulator.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first, the second, and the third rectangular subarrays of the array of permeable bodies is configured to be oriented over a motor cortex region of the brain of the user during use.

11. A system for electrically stimulating a user, the system comprising:

a housing defining an array of openings at a broad surface;

an array of permeable bodies with distal portions exposed through the array of openings;

a substrate region defining an array of protrusions corresponding to and configured to support the array of permeable bodies; and
