Abstract

Methods of depositing materials to provide for efficient coupling of light from a first device to a second device are disclosed. In general, these methods include mounting one or more wafers on a rotating table that is continuously rotated under one or more source targets. A process gas can be provided and one or more of the source targets powered while the wafers are biased to deposit optical dielectric films on the one or more wafers. In some embodiments, a shadow mask can be laterally translated across the one or more wafers during deposition. In some embodiments, deposited films can have lateral and/or horizontal variation in index of refraction and/or lateral variation in thickness.

Claims (29)

1. A waveguide coupler, comprising:

a core;

one or more cladding layers; and

a first converter layer comprising an optical film, deposited between the one or more cladding layers and the core, wherein the first converter layer continuously varies in an index of refraction in a lateral direction between an input end where light is received and an output end where light is emitted and the first converter layer modifies an aspect of optical throughput.

2. The waveguide coupler of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the first converter layer continuously varies in the lateral direction.

3. The waveguide coupler of claim 1 , wherein the index of refraction decreases continuously from the input end to the output end.

4. The waveguide coupler of claim 1 , wherein the first converter layer includes one or more phosphor dopants.

5. The waveguide coupler of claim 1 , wherein the first converter layer forms one or more horizontal PIN junctions.

6. The waveguide coupler of claim 1 , wherein solar light is concentrated into the waveguide coupler.

7. The waveguide coupler of claim 1 , wherein a second converter layer includes a shaped graded index layer adjacent to a waveguide.

8. The waveguide coupler of claim 7 , wherein the waveguide includes a second waveguide coupler that couples solar radiation into an optical fiber.

9. The waveguide coupler of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide coupler is coupled to an LED chip.

10. The waveguide coupler of claim 1 , wherein a cross-sectional area of the first converter layer perpendicular to the lateral direction continuously varies in the lateral direction.

11. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a waveguide coupler, light from a waveguide, the waveguide coupler including a core, one or more cladding layers, and a first converter layer; and

coupling light from the waveguide to an optical receiver, the first converter layer modifying an aspect of the light;

wherein the first converter layer comprises an optical film deposited between the one or more cladding layers and the core and the first converter layer continuously varying in an index of refraction in a lateral direction between an input end where light is received and an output end where light is emitted.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein a thickness of the first converter layer continuously varies in the lateral direction.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein index of refraction decreases continuously from the input end to the output end.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first converter layer includes one or more phosphor dopants.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first converter layer forms one or more horizontal PIN junctions.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein a second converter layer includes a shaped graded index layer adjacent to the waveguide.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein a cross-sectional area of the first converter layer perpendicular to the lateral direction continuously varies in the lateral direction.

18. A system for concentration, coupling, and transport of light, comprising:

an optical transmission line coupled to an upstream optical coupler and configured to provide light; and

a downstream coupler coupled to the optical transmission line and configured to receive light from the optical transmission line, the downstream coupler including a core, one or more cladding layers, and a first converter layer;

wherein the first converter layer comprises a tapered optical film deposited between the one or more cladding layers and the core, the first converter layer uniformly varies laterally in a material property and is configured to modify an aspect of the light.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the material property is index of refraction.

20. The system of claim 18 , wherein the first converter layer forms one or more horizontal PIN junctions.
