Abstract

There is provided a gaming system, gaming machine, and method that presents a plurality of symbols in an array corresponding to a plurality of symbol-bearing reels. Game-logic circuitry animates a persistent symbol in the array. Using a random number generator, the game logic-circuitry spins and stops the reels. In response to spinning of the reels, the game-logic circuitry animates movement of the persistent symbol across a boundary of the array to enter a win zone outside of the array. The game-logic circuitry further animates a triggering symbol associated with the win zone. In response to animating the triggering symbol animating, by the game-logic circuitry, an increment of a meter using a value associated with the persistent symbol.

terminating, concurrently with a stopping of the at least one of the reels, the movement of the persistent symbol at the second display coordinate positions inside the win zone.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein prior to moving the persistent symbol across the boundary of the array into the win zone, the game-logic circuitry performs operations comprising animating movement of the persistent symbol in a direction away from the win zone for at least one instance of spinning and stopping of the reels.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying the persistent symbol in response to determining that the triggering symbol and the persistent symbol appear concurrently within the win zone, wherein the modifying comprises one or more of adding a credit value, multiplying a credit value, awarding a free game, awarding a jackpot, or adding an additional persistent symbol.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the modifying comprises duplicating the persistent symbol according to a pre-configured multiple value; and wherein the value used for the animating the increment of the meter uses, based on the pre-configured multiple value, a multiple of a credit value associated with the persistent symbol.

11 . The method of claim 1 further comprising keeping the persistent symbol within the win zone at the second display coordinate positions for at least one additional instance of spinning and stopping of the reels.

12 . A gaming system comprising:

a presentation assembly configured to present an array associated with a plurality of symbol-bearing reels for a first type of game mechanic; and

game-logic circuitry configured to execute instructions, which instructions, when executed, cause the gaming system to perform operations to:

superimpose via reference to a game array model for relative positioning via the presentation assembly a persistent symbol used by a second type of game mechanic over the array at first display coordinate positions;

store, using the game array model as a reference, the first display coordinate positions of the persistent symbol in a memory location of a memory store of the gaming machine for persistence of the persistent symbol at the first display coordinates during a subsequent spin of the reels;

use a random number generator to spin and stop the reels to populate, for each play of the first type of game mechanic, the array with the standard symbols from the reels according to the first type of game mechanic;

move, in response to spinning of the reels for at least one play and via reference to the memory location and the game array model, the persistent symbol across a boundary of the array to second display coordinate positions, wherein animation of the movement of the persistent symbol across the boundary causes the persistent symbol to enter a win zone outside of the array, wherein the win zone is configured to receive the persistent symbol according to the second type of game mechanic;

store, using the game array model as a reference in response to the movement of the persistent symbol across the boundary, the second display coordinate positions of the persistent symbol in the memory location for persistence of the persistent symbol at the second display coordinates;

animate a triggering symbol associated with the win zone; and

in response to animation of the triggering symbol, and concurrent with animation of an increment of a meter of the gaming system using a value associated with the persistent symbol, remove, via access to the memory location and in response to communication with the presentation assembly, presentation of the persistent symbol from the win zone.
