Abstract

A multiple output regulating charge pump includes a load current regulator to balance currents in multiple branches of at least one load, such as light emitting diodes in a parallel configuration. The load current regulator includes current mirror circuits to provide substantially identical currents to the respective light emitting diodes, thereby producing uniform light from each of the light emitting diodes. The multiple output charge pump includes a charge storage component that is alternately charged during a charge cycle and discharged during a discharge cycle. The charge pump provides current to a second load during the charge cycle and to a first load during a discharge cycle.

Claims (24)

1. A multiple output regulating charge pump that receives a supply voltage and that provides at least a first output and a second output, wherein the first output has a first voltage and the second output has a second voltage, and wherein a current provided to a first load connected to the first output is actively current regulated by an active current regulator circuit coupled in series with the first load.

2. The charge pump of claim 1 , wherein the first output drives a first set of light emitting diodes, and the second output drives a second set of light emitting diodes.

3. The charge pump of claim 1 , wherein the charge pump comprises a charge storage component and current is supplied to a load connected to the second output when the charge storage component is being charged.

4. The charge pump of claim 1 , wherein a charge storage component is periodically charged during a charge cycle and discharged during a discharge cycle to generate the first output and the second output.

5. The charge pump of claim 4 , wherein a discharging current associated with the discharge cycle drives the first load coupled to the first output, and a charging current associated with the charge cycle drives a second load coupled to the second output.

6. A method for providing a multiple output regulator with load current control, the method comprising the acts of:

periodically connecting a supply voltage in series with a charge storage component in a first polarity to provide power to a first load;

periodically connecting the supply voltage in series with the charge storage component in a second polarity to provide power to a second load;

controlling current provided to the second load using a feedback signal derived from the first load; and

actively balancing current in parallel branches of the first load with current sinks.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the charge storage component is discharging in the first polarity and charging in the second polarity.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first load is a set of white light emitting diodes in a parallel configuration.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the current sinks are current mirror circuits that each comprise at least one transistor.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the feedback signal corresponds to a voltage of one of the current mirror circuits.

11. A multiple output regulating charge pump that provides at least a first output and a second output, wherein the first output provides current to a plurality of first loads coupled in parallel, and wherein a load current regulator senses the current of one of the first loads and balances the current among the plurality of first loads with active circuit elements.

12. The multiple output regulating charge pump of claim 11 , further comprising a charge storage component that is alternately charged during a charge cycle and discharged during a discharge cycle, wherein current is provided to the second output during the charge cycle, and wherein current is provided to the first output during the discharge cycle.

13. The multiple output regulating charge pump of claim 11 , wherein current mirror circuits are coupled in series with each of the first loads respectively to balance the current among the first loads.

14. The multiple output regulating charge pump of claim 11 , wherein the first loads comprise a plurality of white light emitting diodes, and the second output provides current to a plurality of green light emitting diodes.

15. The multiple output regulating charge pump of claim 14 , wherein the white light emitting diodes provide light for a color display and the green light emitting diodes provide light for a keypad in a handheld device.

16. The multiple output regulating charge pump of claim 11 , wherein the current provided to the first load is substantially continuous.

17. The multiple output regulating charge pump of claim 16 , further comprising a capacitive element coupled to the first output.

18. The multiple output regulating charge pump of claim 11 , wherein the current provided to the first load pulses at a substantially 50% duty cycle.

19. The multiple output regulating charge pump of claim 11 , wherein the currents provided to the first output and to the second output are substantially identical and substantially constant over a supply voltage that ranges from 3.0 volts to 5.6 volts.

20. The multiple output regulating charge pump of claim 11 , wherein the currents of the respective first loads track the current of the first load being sensed by the load current regulator.
