Abstract

The present invention provides a system for determining characteristics of substrates, such as the presence of contaminants, shape, as well as the spatial relationships between spaced-apart substrates. The spatial relationships include distance and angular orientation between first and second spaced apart substrates.

Claims (28)

1. A system for determining characteristics of a first substrate, lying in a first plane, and a second substrate, lying in a second plane and having a volume of fluid disposed thereon, said system comprising:

a displacement mechanism to vary an area of said substrate over which said volume is disposed, defining changed properties; and

a processing system to sense said changed properties and produce information corresponding to a spatial relationship between said first and second substrates as a function of said changed properties, defining ascertained parameters.

2. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein said changed properties are selected from a set of geometries including, size, shape and symmetry.

3. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein said changed properties include an expansion of said fluid to a predetermined position on said second substrate.

4. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein said displacement mechanism is coupled to receive said information and adjust said spatial relationship between said first and second substrates in response thereto to obtain a desired spatial relationship.

5. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein said processing system further includes an end-point detection system to sense the presence of said volume of liquid at a predetermined position on one of said first and second substrates.

The system as recited in claim 1 wherein said volume of fluid further includes first and second spaced-apart drops positioned on said second substrate, with said displacement mechanism being adapted to compress one of said first and second drops to effectuate a change a geometry of said one of said first and second drops.

The system as recited in claim 1 wherein said volume of fluid further includes a first drop having a first geometry associated therewith and second drop having a second geometry associated therewith, said first and second drops being spaced-apart, with said displacement mechanism being adapted to compress said first and second drops to effectuate a change in said first and second geometries, defining a changed first geometry and a changed second geometry, with said processing system being connected to compare the changed first and second geometries to determine differences therebetween, defining a variance, and determining said ascertained parameters as a function of said variance.

8. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein said processing system further includes an interferometer to determine a distance between said first and second substrates.

9. A system for determining characteristics of a first substrate, lying in a first plane, and a second substrate, lying in a second plane and having a volume of fluid disposed thereon, said system comprising:

a displacement mechanism to vary a distance between said first and second substrates, with said distance defining a gap, with said volume of fluid having an area associated therewith and said displacement mechanism adapted to compress said volume of fluid between said first and second substrates to effectuate a change in properties of said area, defining changed properties;

a detector system to sense said changed properties and produce data in response thereto; and

a processing system to receive said data and produce information corresponding to a spatial relationship between said first and second substrates as a function of said changed properties, defining a measured spatial relationship.

10. The system as recited in claim 9 wherein said changed properties are selected from a set of properties consisting of a presence of contamination, a spatial relationship, and shape.

11. The system as recited in claim 9 wherein said changed properties are selected from a set of geometries including, size, shape and symmetry.

12. The system as recited in claim 9 wherein said changed properties includes an expansion of said fluid to a predetermined position on said second substrate.

13. The system as recited in claim 9 wherein said displacement mechanism is coupled to receive said information and adjust said spatial relationship between said first and second substrates in response thereto to obtain a desired spatial relationship.

14. The system as recited in claim 9 wherein said detector system further includes an end-point detection system to sense the presence of said volume of liquid at a predetermined position on one of said first and second substrates.

The system as recited in claim 9 wherein said volume of fluid further includes first and second spaced-apart drops of said fluid positioned on said second substrate, with said displacement mechanism adapted to compress one of said first and second drops to effectuate a change in geometry of said one of said first and second drops, with said detector system including a CCD sensor.

The system as recited in claim 9 wherein said volume of fluid further includes a first drop having a first geometry associated therewith and second drop having a second geometry associated therewith, said first and second drops being spaced-apart and positioned on said second substrate, with said displacement mechanism adapted to compress said first and second drops to effectuate a change in said first and second geometries, defining a changed first geometry and a changed second geometry, said processor connected to compare the changed first and second geometries to determine differences therebetween, defining a variance, and determining said changed properties as a function of said variance.

17. The system as recited in claim 9 wherein said detection system further includes an interferometer to determine a distance between said first and second substrates.

18. A system for determining characteristics of a first substrate, lying in a first plane, and a second substrate, lying in a second plane and having a volume of fluid disposed thereon, said system comprising:

a displacement mechanism to vary an area of said substrate over which said volume is disposed, defining changed properties, with said changed properties being selected from a set of geometries including, size, shape symmetry, and expansion of said fluid to a predetermined position on said second substrate; and

a processing system to sense said changed properties and produce information corresponding to a spatial relationship between said first and second substrates as a function of said changed properties, defining ascertained parameters.

19. The system as recited in claim 18 wherein said displacement mechanism is coupled to receive said information and adjust said spatial relationship between said first and second substrates in response thereto to obtain a desired spatial relationship.

The system as recited in claim 18 wherein said volume of fluid further includes a first drop having a first geometry associated therewith and second drop having a second geometry associated therewith, said first and second drops being spaced-apart, with said displacement mechanism being adapted to compress said first and second drops to effectuate a change in said first and second geometries, defining a changed first geometry and a changed second geometry, with said processing system being connected to compare the changed first and second geometries to determine differences therebetween, defining a variance, and determining said changed properties as a function of said variance.

21. The system as recited in claim 19 wherein said processing system further includes a detection system selected from a set of detection systems comprising a CCD sensor and an interferometer.
