Abstract

An electrical connector comprised of a plurality of electrical contacts arranged in a stair-step configuration designed to mate with electrical components having electrical contacts arranged in a stair-step configuration. A direct connect signaling system comprised of stair-step electrical connectors mated to stair-step printed circuit boards, other stair-step electrical components, or combinations thereof.

Claims (39)

1. An electrical connector assembly comprising:

a first electrical component having a dielectric member with a first plurality of electrical contacts arranged in a stair-step configuration on at least two dielectric surfaces; and

a second electrical component having a dielectric member with a second plurality of electrical contacts arranged in a stair-step configuration on at least two surfaces; and

a connective member having a plurality of cantilever beam conductive members with respective first and second ends, each cantilever beam conductive member being configured to deflect in a forcible engagement with first and second electrical contacts, wherein the first end of each cantilever beam conductive member is forcibly and conductively coupled with a respective electrical contact from among the first plurality of electrical contacts, and the second end of each cantilever beam conductive member is forcibly and conductively coupled with a respective electrical contact among the second plurality of electrical contacts.

2. The electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first electrical component is a printed circuit board.

3. The electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first plurality of cantilever beam conductive members is coupled to a ground potential.

4. The electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the connective member comprises a dielectric support that aligns the plurality of cantilever beam conductive members.

5. The electrical connector assembly of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the first plurality of conductive members is a signal carrying conductor paired with the conductive member coupled to ground potential.

The electrical connector assembly of claim 4 wherein each of the conductive members further comprises an elongated shape having a mid-point between the first and second ends, and wherein the dielectric support for aligning the plurality of conductive members has an engagement area to forcibly resist the mid-point of a first conductive member when the first end and the second end of the first conductive member are forcibly engaged with respective electrical contacts.

7. The electrical connector assembly of claim 6 wherein a forcible engagement between the first end of a conductive member and an electrical contact exerts a moment on a length of the conductive member between the first end and the mid-point of the conductive member.

8. The electrical connector assembly of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of conductive members exhibits a substantially identical electrical impedance.

9. The electrical connector assembly of claim 8 wherein an impedance of a conductive member is determined, at least in part, by a cross sectional area of the a conductive member.

10. An electrical connector system comprising:

a. an electrical component having arrays of electrical contact pads arranged in a first stair-step configuration;

b. a connector interconnectable to the electrical component, the connector comprising one or more dielectric elements and at least two cantilever beam conductive elements, each cantilever beam conductive element having a first electrical contact forcibly engaging a corresponding electrical contact pad within the first stairstep configuration.

11. An assembly of electrical components, including:

a first electrical component with a first plurality of conductive contacts disposed on a plurality of dielectric surfaces, including first and second dielectric surfaces that form at least a portion of a first stair step formation;

a second electrical component with a second plurality of conductive contacts disposed on a plurality of dielectric surfaces, including third and fourth dielectric surfaces that form at least a portion of a second stair step formation, wherein the first and second electrical components are in a fixed position relative to each other such that the first and third surfaces are set on intersecting planes; and

an electrical connector comprising a plurality of elongated cantilever beam conductive elements, each elongated conductive element having a first end, a second end, and a mid-point, each of the first ends engaging, in a cantilever engagement, a corresponding electrical contact from among the first plurality of conductive contacts.

12. The assembly of electrical components of claim 11 further comprising a dielectric support configured to exert a resistive force against the mid-point of each of the each of the plurality of elongated conductive elements.

13. The interconnection system of claim 11 wherein each of the plurality of elongated conductive elements exhibits a substantially identical electrical impedance.

14. The interconnection system of claim 13 wherein an impedance of an elongated conductive element is determined, at least in part, by a cross sectional area of the an elongated conductive element.

15. The interconnection system of claim 11 wherein the plurality of elongated conductive members includes a differential pair comprising a first and second elongated conductive member coupled to a differential signal source.

16. An electrical interconnection system comprising:

a. a insulating member having (i) first and second shelves arranged to form a first stair step formation, (ii) third and fourth shelves arranged to form a second stair step formation, (iii) a first hole extending through the insulating member from the first shelf to the third shelf, and (iv) a second hole extending through the insulating member from the second shelf to the fourth shelf;

b. a plurality of cantilever beam electrical conductors having an elongated shape with a first end, a second end, and a mid point, a first cantilever beam electrical conductor extending through the first hole and a second cantilever beam electrical conductor extending through the second hole;

c. a first electrical member having a first plurality of electrical contacts arranged in stair step configuration, each of the first plurality of electrical contacts being engaged with a corresponding first end of a cantilever beam electrical conductor; and

d. a second electrical member having a second plurality of electrical contacts arranged in stair step configuration, each of the second plurality of contacts being engaged with a corresponding second end of a cantilever beam electrical conductor.

The electrical interconnection system of claim 16 wherein the insulating member further comprises a plurality of engagement surfaces corresponding to the respective cantilever beam electrical conductors, each engagement surface configured to exert a resistive force on the mid-point of a corresponding the cantilever beam electrical conductor.

The electrical interconnection system of claim 17 , wherein the resistive force exerted on a mid-point of a first cantilever beam electrical conductor is equal but opposite to the sum of a component of force exerted by a first contact against the first end of the first cantilever beam electrical conductor and a force exerted by a second contact against on the second end of the first cantilever beam electrical conductor.

19. The interconnection system of claim 16 wherein each of the plurality of cantilever beam electrical conductors exhibits a substantially identical electrical impedance.

20. The interconnection system of claim 16 wherein an impedance of each of the plurality of cantilever beam electrical conductors is determined, at least in part, by a cross sectional area of the a cantilever beam electrical conductor.

21. The interconnection system of claim 16 wherein the plurality of cantilever beam electrical conductors includes a differential pair comprising a first and second cantilever beam electrical conductors coupled to a differential signal source.

22. The assembly of claim 11 wherein the second end of each of the elongated cantilever beam conductive elements engages a corresponding electrical contact from among the second plurality of conductive contacts.

23. The assembly of electrical components in claim 22 , further comprising:

a dielectric structure for supporting the elongated cantilever beam conductive elements, the dielectric structure including:

a third stair step formation formed thereon and comprising fifth and sixth dielectric surfaces configured to engage the first and second dielectric surfaces when the first ends of the elongated conductive members are in a cantilever engagement with respective contacts from among the first plurality of contacts; and

a fourth stair step formation formed thereon and comprising seventh and eight dielectric surfaces configured to engage the third and fourth dielectric surfaces when the second ends of the elongated conductive members are in a cantilever engagement with respective contacts from among the second plurality of contacts.

24. The assembly of electrical components of claim 23 , wherein the plurality of second ends are arranged in a stair step configuration.
