Abstract

A preassembled wiring terminal subassembly for use in a hybrid electro-mechanical transmission includes a plurality of wires and a plurality of wire terminals each defining a respective attachment hole and being operatively connected to a respective one of the plurality of wires. The subassembly also includes a plurality of conductive rods each defining a hole, and a plurality of threaded fasteners each extending through the attachment hole of a respective wire terminal and through the hole of a respective rod. The terminals, rods, and threaded fasteners are sufficiently interconnected for movement as a unit during transmission assembly to facilitate the establishment of an electrical connection between a control unit and one or more motor/generators.

Claims (36)

1. A hybrid electro-mechanical transmission comprising:

a plurality of wires;

a plurality of wire terminals each defining a respective attachment hole and being operatively connected to a respective one of said plurality of wires;

a plurality of electrically conductive rods, each having a respective first end and a respective second end and defining a respective rod hole extending from said respective first end to said respective second end; and

a plurality of threaded fasteners, each extending through the respective attachment hole of one of said plurality of wire terminals and through the respective rod hole of one of said rods;

wherein said wires, wire terminals, rods, and threaded fasteners are sufficiently interconnected with one another for selective unitary movement as a module during transmission assembly.

The transmission of claim 1 , further comprising a first motor/generator assembly including a first motor/generator, a first housing defining a first cavity at least partially containing the first motor/generator; a first connector assembly including a first isolator member mounted with respect to the first housing, a first plurality of nuts each being nonrotatably mounted with respect to the first isolator and defining a respective threaded nut hole, and a first plurality of conductive paths being operatively connected to the first motor/generator and each including a respective conductive path terminal defining a respective terminal hole aligning with the nut hole of a respective one of said first plurality of nuts.

The transmission of claim 2 , wherein each of said plurality of threaded fasteners engages the threaded nut hole of a respective one of said first plurality of nuts such that the first end of each of said plurality of rods contacts one of said wire terminals and the second end of each of said plurality of rods contacts one of said conductive path terminals to establish an electrical connection between one of said plurality of wires and one of said first plurality of conductive paths.

4. The transmission of claim 3 , further comprising an insulator member at least partially extending between said rods to prevent electrical communication therebetween.

5. The transmission of claim 4 , wherein said insulator member defines a plurality of cylindrical openings, and wherein each of said plurality of rods extends through a respective one of said plurality of cylindrical openings.

The transmission of claim 2 , further comprising a second motor/generator assembly including a second motor/generator, a second housing defining a second cavity at least partially containing the second motor/generator; a second connector assembly including a second isolator member mounted with respect to the second housing, a second plurality of nuts each being nonrotatably mounted with respect to the second isolator member and defining a respective threaded nut hole, and a second plurality of conductive paths operatively connected to the second motor/generator and each including a respective conductive path terminal defining a respective terminal hole aligning with the nut hole of a respective one of said second plurality of nuts.

The transmission of claim 6 , wherein the nut hole of each of said first and second pluralities of nuts is engaged with a respective one of the threaded fasteners such that the first end of each of said plurality of rods contacts one of said wire terminals and the second end of each of said plurality of rods contacts one of said conductive path terminals to establish an electrical connection between one of said plurality of wires and one of said first or second plurality of conductive paths.

8. The transmission of claim 7 , further comprising a terminal box member interconnecting each of said plurality of wires.

9. The transmission of claim 8 , wherein said terminal box member defines an aperture, and wherein the wire terminals of each of said plurality of wires is disposed within the aperture.

10. The transmission of claim 9 , wherein said terminal box member defines a plurality of ports; and wherein each of said plurality of wires extends through a respective one of said plurality of ports.

The transmission of claim 10 , further comprising a transmission housing defining a cavity in which the first and second motor/generator assemblies are disposed and defining an opening; and wherein the terminal box member is attached to the transmission housing such that the plurality of threaded fasteners extends through the opening.

12. A wire terminal subassembly for a hybrid electro-mechanical transmission having at least one motor/generator, the wire terminal subassembly comprising:

a plurality of wires;

a plurality of wire terminals each being operatively connected to one of said plurality of wires and defining a respective attachment hole;

a plurality of conductive rods each having a first end and a second end and defining a respective aperture extending from the first end to the second end;

a plurality of threaded fasteners each extending through the attachment hole of one of said plurality of wire terminals and the opening of a respective one of said conductive rods; and

at least one insulator member separating said conductive rods to prevent electrical communication between said conductive rods;

wherein said wire terminals, said conductive rods, said threaded fasteners, and said at least one insulator member are sufficiently interconnected for substantially unitary movement with respect to the at least one motor/generator during transmission assembly.

The wire terminal subassembly of claim 12 , wherein said at least one insulator member defines at least two openings; and wherein each of said at least two openings has a respective one of said conductive rods extending therethrough; and wherein said at least one insulator member includes a loop through which one of said wires or said terminals extends.

14. The wire terminal subassembly of claim 12 , further comprising a terminal box member defining a terminal box aperture; and wherein said plurality of wire terminals is disposed within the terminal box aperture.

15. The wire terminal subassembly of claim 14 , wherein the terminal box member defines a plurality of ports each having a respective one of said wires extending therethrough.

16. A hybrid electro-mechanical transmission comprising:

a first motor/generator assembly including a first motor/generator, a first housing defining a first cavity at least partially containing the first motor/generator; a first connector assembly including a first isolator member mounted with respect to the first housing, a first plurality of nuts each being nonrotatably mounted with respect to the first isolator and defining a respective threaded nut hole, and a first plurality of wire terminals in electrical communication with said first motor/generator and each of said first plurality of wire terminals defining a respective terminal hole aligning with the nut hole of a respective one of said first plurality of nuts;

a second motor/generator assembly including a second motor/generator, a second housing defining a second cavity at least partially containing the second motor/generator; a second connector assembly including a second isolator member mounted with respect to the second housing, a second plurality of nuts each being nonrotatably mounted with respect to the second isolator member and defining a respective threaded nut hole, and a second plurality of terminals in electrical communication with said second motor/generator and each of said second plurality of terminals defining a respective terminal hole aligning with the nut hole of a respective one of said second plurality of nuts;

said first and second pluralities of terminals having a predetermined spatial relationship with one another; and

a wiring terminal subassembly having

a plurality of wires,

a third plurality of wire terminals each defining a respective attachment hole and being operatively connected to a respective one of said plurality of wires,

a plurality of electrically conductive rods, each having a respective first end and a respective second end and defining a respective rod hole extending from said respective first end to said respective second end, and

a plurality of threaded fasteners, each extending through the respective attachment hole of one of said plurality of wire terminals and through the respective rod hole of one of said rods;

said wires, wire terminals, rods, and threaded fasteners being sufficiently interconnected with one another for selective unitary movement as a module during transmission assembly such that said threaded fasteners have the same predetermined spatial relationship with one another as the first and second pluralities of terminals.
