Abstract

In one embodiment, a programmable logic device includes a plurality of programmable logic blocks and a plurality of slices within each of the programmable logic blocks. At least one programmable logic blocks includes a first slice not adapted to provide register functionality or RAM functionality, a second slice adapted to provide register functionality but not RAM functionality, and a third slice adapted to provide register functionality and RAM functionality. Control logic within the programmable logic block is adapted to provide control signals at the programmable block level and at the slice level.

Claims (14)

1. A programmable logic device comprising:

a first row of programmable logic blocks, each block of the first row including:

a first slice not adapted to provide register functionality and RAM functionality and a second slice adapted to provide register functionality but not RAM functionality; and

control logic adapted to provide control signals at the programmable block level and at the slice level; and

a second row of programmable logic blocks, each block of the second row including:

a first slice not adapted to provide register functionality and RAM functionality and a second slice adapted to provide register functionality and RAM functionality; and

control logic adapted to provide control signals at the programmable block level and at the slice level.

2. The programmable logic device of claim 1 , wherein each slice includes at least two lookup tables.

3. The programmable logic device of claim 1 , wherein the number of the control signals provided to each programmable logic block is less than the number of control signals provided to the slices.

4. The programmable logic device of claim 1 , wherein the control logic in each programmable logic block is further adapted to provide the control signals at the register level.

5. The programmable logic device of claim 1 , wherein the control logic in each programmable logic block includes multiplexers, wherein multiplexer control signals are provided to the multiplexers by configuration memory cells within the device.

6. The programmable logic device of claim 1 , wherein:

each programmable logic block in the first row includes at least three slices adapted to provide register functionality but not RAM functionality; and

each programmable logic block in the second row includes at least three slices adapted to provide register functionality and RAM functionality.
