Abstract

An LED package comprises an LED for emitting LED light, and a conversion material remote to said LED for down-converting the wavelength of LED light. The package further comprises a reflector directing at least some of the LED light toward the conversion material, the conversion material down-converting the wavelength of at least some of the reflected LED light. A method for emitting light from an LED package comprising providing an LED, reflector and conversion material, and emitting light from said LED, at least some of the LED light emitted toward the reflector. The method further comprises reflecting at least some of the LED light toward the conversion material, and converting at least some of said reflected LED light at the conversion material. At least some of the converted reflected LED light is emitted by the LED package.

Claims (29)

1. A light emitter package, comprising:

a light emitter;

a first beam shaping optic proximate to said light emitter;

a primary reflector arranged to accept light transmitted through said first beam shaping optic;

a reflective converter remote from said light emitter disposed to accept reflected light from said primary reflector, said reflective converter capable of converting the wavelength of at least a portion of said reflected light, said reflective converter arranged to reflect converted and non-converted light toward an emission surface; and

a second beam shaping optic arranged to accept light from said reflective converter.

2. The light emitter package of claim 1 , said first beam shaping optic comprising a hemispherical lens designed to focus substantially all of the light from said emitter onto said primary reflector.

3. The light emitter package of claim 1 , said second beam shaping object comprising at least one beam focusing feature to focus the light as it transmits through said emission surface.

4. The light emitter package of claim 1 , said light emitter comprising a light emitting diode or a laser diode.

5. The light emitting package of claim 4 , wherein said light emitter emits radiation having an average wavelength of 360-500 nm.

6. The light emitting package of claim 1 , wherein light transmitted through said emission surface is white light.

7. The light emitting package of claim 1 , said reflective converter comprising at least one type of phosphor.

8. The light emitting package of claim 1 , said reflective converter comprising scattering particles.

9. The light emitting package of claim 1 , said second beam shaping optic comprising a diffusive element.

10. A light emitter package, comprising:

a mount surface;

a plurality of light emitters on said mount surface;

a plurality of primary reflectors, each of said reflectors disposed proximate to at least one of said plurality of light emitters such that light from said light emitters is reflected; and

a plurality of reflective converters on said mount surface, said reflective converters arranged to accept reflected light from at least one of said plurality of primary reflectors, said reflective converters capable of converting the wavelength of at least a portion of said reflected light, said reflective converters arranged to reflect converted and non-converted light toward an emission surface.

11. The light emitter package of claim 10 , further comprising an optical element disposed proximate to said mount surface, said optical element comprising said emission surface, said optical element transmitting at least a portion of converted and non-converted light.

12. The light emitter package of claim 11 , said optical element comprising a diffuser.

13. The light emitter package of claim 11 , said optical element comprising a lens.

14. The light emitter package of claim 10 , said mount surface comprising a circuit board.

15. The light emitter package of claim 10 , wherein each of said reflective converters are disposed between adjacent light emitters.

16. The light emitter package of claim 10 , further comprising a submount interposed between each of said light emitters and said mount surface.

17. The light emitter package of claim 10 , said reflective converter comprising at least one type of phosphor.

18. The light emitter package of claim 10 , said reflective converter comprising scattering particles.

19. The light emitter package of claim 10 , said reflective converter comprising neutral reflective elements.

20. The light emitter package of claim 10 , said emitter package emitting white light.
