Abstract

An image sensor includes multiple output channels, a non-destructive charge sensing output channel having an associated gain value of G 1 and a charge multiplying output channel having an associated gain value G 3 . The image sensor can also include a charge bypass output channel having an associated gain value G 2 . For each charge packet, a pixel signal produced by either the charge sensing output channel, the charge multiplying output channel or the charge bypass output channel is selected. If the pixel signal produced by the charge sensing output channel is selected, a gain factor (G 3 /G 1 ) is applied to each pixel signal selected from the charge bypass output channel. If the pixel signal produced by the charge bypass output channel is selected, a gain factor (G 3 /G 2 ) is applied to each pixel signal selected from the charge bypass output channel. The pixel signals are combined to produce an image.

Claims (22)

1. A method for producing an image captured by an image sensor comprising (i) a charge multiplying output channel that produces pixel signals corresponding to entire charge packets that will not saturate the charge multiplying output channel, and (ii) a charge bypass output channel that produces pixel signals corresponding to entire charge packets that will saturate the charge multiplying output channel, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of charge packets from a pixel array and, for each charge packet, (i) processing the entire charge packet to produce a pixel signal having a gain G 1 and (ii) determining if the charge packet will saturate the charge multiplying output channel;

directing one or more entire charge packets that will not saturate the charge multiplying output channel to the charge multiplying output channel;

for each charge packet directed to the charge multiplying output channel, processing the charge packet to produce a pixel signal having a gain G 3 ;

directing one or more entire charge packets that will saturate the charge multiplying output channel to the charge bypass output channel;

for each charge packet directed to the charge bypass output channel, processing the charge packet to produce a pixel signal having a gain G 2 ;

determining a gain factor G 3 /G 2 by multiplying (i) a ratio of pixel signals having gains of G 3 and G 1 processed from the same charge packet with (ii) a ratio of pixel signals having gains of G 1 and G 2 processed from the same charge packet; and

combining the pixel signals produced by the charge multiplying output channel with the pixel signals produced by the charge bypass output channel to produce the image, applying the gain factor G 3 /G 2 to the pixel signals produced by the charge bypass output channel thereduring.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gain factor G 3 /G 2 is determined as a running average.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gain factor G 3 /G 2 is determined as a running least squares fit average.

4. A method for producing an image captured by an image sensor comprising (i) a charge multiplying output channel that produces pixel signals corresponding to a first set of one or more entire charge packets that will not saturate the charge multiplying output channel, (ii) a charge bypass output channel that produces pixel signals corresponding to a second set of one or more entire charge packets that will saturate the charge multiplying output channel but will not saturate an amplifier disposed within the charge bypass output channel, and (iii) a non-destructive charge sensing output channel that produces pixel signals corresponding to a third set of one or more entire charge packets that will saturate both the charge multiplying output channel and the amplifier disposed within the charge bypass output channel, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of charge packets from a pixel array and, for each charge packet, (i) non-destructively processing the entire charge packet with the non-destructive charge sensing output channel to produce a pixel signal having a gain G 1 and (ii) determining if the charge packet will saturate the charge multiplying output channel or the amplifier disposed within the charge bypass output channel;

directing each of the first set of charge packets to the charge multiplying output channel and processing the charge packet to produce a pixel signal having a gain G 3 ;

directing each of the second set of charge packets to the charge bypass output channel and processing the charge packet to produce a pixel signal having a gain G 2 ;

directing each of the third set of charge packets to the charge bypass output channel;

determining a gain factor G 3 /G 2 by multiplying (i) a ratio of pixel signals having gains of G 3 and G 1 processed from the same charge packet with (ii) a ratio of pixel signals having gains of G 1 and G 2 processed from the same charge packet; and

combining the (i) pixel signals produced from the first set of charge packets, (ii) the pixel signals produced from the second set of charge packets, and (iii) the pixel signals produced from the third set of charge packets to produce the image and, thereduring, applying (a) the gain factor G 3 /G 2 to the pixel signals produced from the second set of charge packets and (b) a gain factor G 3 /G 1 to the pixel signals produced from the third set of charge packets.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the gain factor G 3 /G 2 is determined as a running average.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the gain factor G 3 /G 2 is determined as a running least squares fit average.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the gain factor G 3 /G 1 is determined as a running average.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the gain factor G 3 /G 1 is determined as a running least squares fit average.

9. The method of claim 4 , further comprising processing each of the third set of charge packets to produce a pixel signal that saturates the amplifier disposed within the charge bypass output channel.
