Abstract

The present invention provides an expandable fusion device capable of being installed inside an intervertebral disc space to maintain normal disc spacing and restore spinal stability, thereby facilitating an intervertebral fusion. In one embodiment, the fusion device includes a body portion, a first endplate, and a second endplate, the first and second endplates capable of being moved in a direction away from the body portion into an expanded configuration or capable of being moved towards the body portion into an unexpanded configuration. The fusion device is capable of being deployed and installed in both configurations.

Claims (27)

1. An implant for vertebral implantation, comprising:

an upper endplate configured to engage a first vertebra;

a lower endplate configured to engage a second vertebra; and

a lordotic mechanism received between the upper endplate and the lower endplate, wherein the lordotic mechanism is capable of tilting at least one of the upper endplate and the lower endplate such that a height of the implant at a first portion of the implant is different from a height of the implant at a second portion of the implant, wherein the lordotic mechanism comprises:

a translation member received between the upper endplate and the lower endplate, the translation member including at least one ramp for engaging the upper endplate and at least one ramp for engaging the lower endplate, wherein movement of the translation member causes the upper endplate to separate from the lower endplate; and

an actuation member for translating the translation member,

wherein the lordotic mechanism is configured to move at least one of the upper endplate and the lower endplate between a fully collapsed position and a fully expanded position,

wherein the lordotic mechanism is configured to expand the implant by moving the actuation member towards a center of the implant, and

wherein the entire translation member is positioned between the upper and lower endplates in the fully collapsed position and the translation member does not extend beyond the upper endplate and the lower endplate when the upper endplate and the lower endplate are in the fully collapsed position.

2. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the lordotic mechanism is capable of tilting the upper endplate and/or the lower endplate such that a height of the implant is greater at an anterior portion of the implant relative to a posterior portion of the implant.

3. The implant of claim 1 , further comprising a second lordotic mechanism.

4. The implant of claim 3 , wherein the implant is capable of tilting in both an anterior-posterior direction, and from a side-to-side direction.

5. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the translation member comprises a first ramped surface and a second ramped surface extending from an upper surface of the translation member, wherein the first ramped surface and the second ramped surface are separated by a bridge member that is of a constant length.

6. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the upper endplate extends from a first end to a second end and the lower endplate extends from a first end to a second end, and in the collapsed position, the translation member is positioned between the first and second ends of the upper and lower endplates.

7. An implant for vertebral implantation, comprising:

an upper endplate configured to engage a first vertebra;

a lower endplate configured to engage a second vertebra; and

a lordotic mechanism received between the upper endplate and the lower endplate, wherein the lordotic mechanism is capable of tilting at least one of the upper endplate and the lower endplate such that a height of the implant varies along a length of the implant, the lordotic mechanism further comprising:

a translation member received between the upper endplate and the lower endplate, the translation member including at least one ramp for engaging the upper endplate and at least one ramp for engaging the lower endplate, wherein movement of the translation member causes the upper endplate to separate from the lower endplate; and

an actuation member for translating the translation member; wherein the lordotic mechanism is configured to move at least one of the upper endplate and the lower endplate between a fully collapsed position and a fully expanded position,

wherein the lordotic mechanism is configured to expand the implant by moving the actuation member towards a center of the implant, and

wherein the entire translation member is positioned between the upper and lower endplates in the fully collapsed position and the translation member does not extend beyond the upper endplate and lower endplate when the upper endplate and lower endplate are in the fully collapsed position.

8. The implant of claim 7 , wherein the translation member of the lordotic mechanism is a translatable wedge member, wherein the wedge member includes an angled surface.

9. The implant of claim 8 , wherein the translation member of the lordotic mechanism comprises a first translatable wedge member and a second translatable wedge member, wherein the first translatable wedge member and the second translatable wedge member are supported on a shaft.

10. The implant of claim 8 , wherein the wedge member is threaded.

11. The implant of claim 7 , wherein the translation member comprises a first ramp and a second ramp, wherein the first ramp and the second ramp extend from a lower surface, wherein the first ramp and the second ramp are connected to one another via a bridge member.

12. The implant of claim 11 , wherein a distance of separation between the first ramp and the second ramp is constant.
