Abstract

An end effector is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw, a second jaw, and a staple cartridge assembly. At least one of the first jaw and the second iaw is movable to compress tissue between the first jaw and the second jaw. The staple cartridge assembly comprises a staple cartridge, a plurality of staples, and a first layer. The staple cartridge includes a deck comprising a plurality of staple cavities. The first layer comprises a composite absorbable material including at least two distinct fibrous materials. The first layer is attached to the first jaw by an attachment system comprised of polyglycolic acid that wraps over the first layer in more than two places. The end effector further comprises a second layer comprising a composite absorbable material including at least two distinct fibrous materials. The second layer is attached to the second jaw in more than two places.

Claims (41)

1. An end effector, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

a second jaw comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein at least one of said first jaw and said second jaw is movable to compress tissue between said first jaw and said second jaw;

a staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a staple cartridge including a deck, wherein said deck comprises a plurality of staple cavities, and wherein said deck is configured to support the tissue;

a plurality of staples at least partially stored in said staple cavities; and

a first layer positioned adjacent to said deck, wherein said first layer comprises a composite absorbable material including at least two distinct fibrous materials, and wherein said first layer is attached to said first jaw by an attachment system comprised of polyglycolic acid that wraps over said first layer in more than two places between said proximal end and said distal end of said first jaw; and

a second layer comprising a composite absorbable material including at least two distinct fibrous materials, wherein said second layer is attached to said second jaw in more than two places between said proximal end and said distal end of said second jaw.

2. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein a film attaches said first layer to said first jaw in more than two places between said proximal end and said distal end of said first jaw.

3. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of each staple is stored in said staple cavities, wherein a second portion of each staple is embedded in said first layer, and wherein said first layer is attached to said first jaw in more than two places between said proximal end and said distal end of said first jaw via said second portion of each staple.

4. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said staple cartridge assembly is releasably retained in said first jaw.

5. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said at least two distinct fibrous materials of said first layer and said at least two distinct fibrous materials of said second layer comprise polyglycolic acid and oxidized regenerated cellulose.

6. The end effector of claim 5 , wherein said composite absorbable material of said first layer and said composite absorbable material of said second layer further comprise at least one of polycaprolactone, polyactic acid, polydioxanone, polyhydroxyalkanoate, and poliglecaprone.

7. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said composite absorbable material of said first layer is different than said composite absorbable material of said second layer.

8. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said composite absorbable material of said first layer and said composite absorbable material of said second layer comprise at least one synthetic absorbable polymer and at least one non-synthetic absorbable polymer.

9. An end effector, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

a second jaw comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein at least one of said first jaw and said second jaw is movable to compress tissue between said first jaw and said second jaw;

a staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a staple cartridge including a tissue-supporting surface, wherein said tissue-supporting surface comprises a plurality of staple slots;

a plurality of staples releasably stored in said staple slots; and

a first layer positioned adjacent to said tissue-supporting surface, wherein said first layer comprises a composite absorbable material including at least two distinct fiber materials, and wherein said first layer is fastened to said first jaw by a securement system composed of polyglycolic acid that wraps over said first layer in more than two places between said proximal end and said distal end of said first jaw; and

a second layer comprising a composite absorbable material including at least two distinct fiber materials, wherein said second layer is fastened to said second jaw in more than two places between said proximal end and said distal end of said second jaw.

10. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein a film fastens said first layer to said first jaw in more than two places between said proximal end and said distal end of said first jaw.

11. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein said at least two distinct fiber materials of said first layer and said at least two distinct fiber materials of said second layer comprise polyglycolic acid and oxidized regenerated cellulose.

12. The end effector of claim 11 , wherein said composite absorbable material of said first layer and said composite absorbable material of said second layer further comprise at least one of polycaprolactone, polyactic acid, polydioxanone, polyhydroxyalkanoate, and poliglecaprone.

13. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein said composite absorbable material of said first layer is different than said composite absorbable material of said second layer.

14. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein said composite absorbable material of said first layer and said composite absorbable material of said second layer further comprise at least one synthetic absorbable polymer and at least one non-synthetic absorbable polymer.
