Abstract

A data storage device includes a memory and a controller. The memory includes a first partition and a second partition. The controller includes a pattern detector that is configured to detect one or more tags in data from an access device to be stored in the first partition. The controller is configured to generate, in the second partition, one or more links to the data that is stored in the first partition, the one or more links organized according to metadata associated with the one or more tags.

Claims (27)

1. A data storage device comprising:

a non-volatile memory including a first partition and a second partition, the first partition including a first file system and the second partition including a second file system; and

a controller within the storage device comprising both a separate hardware metadata extractor and a hardware link generator, the controller further comprising a processor, wherein the controller comprises a hardware pattern detector that is configured to detect one or more tags in data from an access device to be stored as one or more directory entries in the first file system in the first partition, the controller configured to automatically generate, in the second partition, one or more links, through the hardware link generator, corresponding to one or more virtual directory entries in the second file system that points to the one or more directory entries in the first file system comprising the data that is stored in the first partition, the one or more links organized according to extracting metadata associated with the one or more tags as extracted by the metadata extractor.

2. The data storage device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to populate a metadata database with the metadata.

3. The data storage device of claim 2 , wherein the non-volatile memory includes the metadata database.

4. The data storage device of claim 1 , wherein the second partition is accessible to the access device as a read-only partition.

5. The data storage device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more tags include exchangeable image file format (EXIF) tags.

6. The data storage device of claim 1 , wherein the data includes image data.

7. A method performed in a data storage device, the method comprising:

detecting, through use of a controller in the data storage device one or more tags in data that is received from an access device and that is to be stored in a first partition of a non-volatile memory of the storage device, the first partition including a first file system, the data that is to be stored in the first partition including one or more directory entries in the first file system; and

generating, through use of a controller within the data storage device with a processor comprising both a separate hardware link generator and hardware metadata extractor, in a second partition including a second file system of the non-volatile memory and based on metadata associated with the one or more tags as determined by the hardware metadata extractor, links corresponding to one or more virtual directory entries in the second file system that points to the one or more directory entries in the first file system comprising the data stored in the first partition, wherein the generating is performed automatically as determined by the hardware link generator.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the links are generated when the data storage device is unmounted.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising populating a metadata database with the metadata.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the data includes image data.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more tags include one or more exchangeable image file format (EXIF) tags.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the metadata includes EXIF data.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the links are generated when the data storage device is inaccessible to the access device.

14. A data storage device, comprising:

a non-volatile memory including:

a first partition including a first file system to store data received from an access device, the data that is to be stored in the first partition including one or more directory entries in the first file system, and

a second partition including a second file system to store one or more directories of links, as determined by a hardware link generator, corresponding to one or more virtual directory entries in the second file system that points to the one or more directory entries in the first file system comprising the data stored in the first partition; and

a controller within the device, the controller comprising a processor comprising the hardware link generator, a hardware metadata extractor and a hardware pattern detector to detect one or more tags from the data, configured to automatically generate or update the one or more directory entries in the first file system based on metadata, as extracted by the metadata extractor, associated with the one or more tags from the data.

15. The data storage device of claim 14 , wherein the metadata includes exchangeable image file format (EXIF) data.

16. The data storage device of claim 14 , wherein the data includes image data.

17. The data storage device of claim 14 , wherein the controller is configured to compare one or more bits of the data to a bit pattern corresponding to one or more tags.

18. The data storage device of claim 14 , wherein the second partition is accessible to the access device as a read-only partition.

19. The data storage device of claim 14 , wherein the controller is configured to populate a metadata database with the metadata.
