Abstract

The present disclosure includes apparatuses and methods related to memory alignment. An example method comprises performing an alignment operation on a first byte-based memory element and a second byte-based memory element such that a padding bit of the first byte-based memory element is logically adjacent to a padding bit of the second byte-based memory element and a data bit of the first byte-based memory element is logically adjacent to a data bit of the second byte-based memory element.

Claims (38)

1. A method for memory alignment, comprising:

performing an alignment operation on a first byte-based memory element and a second byte-based memory element of a memory allocation from a byte-based alignment to a non-byte-based alignment, wherein:

the first and second byte-based memory elements each include at least one byte having at least one data bit and at least one padding bit; and

the non-byte-based alignment includes:

the at least one padding bit of the first byte-based memory element logically adjacent to the at least one padding bit of the second byte-based memory element; and

the at least one data bit of the first byte-based memory element logically adjacent to the at least one data bit of the second byte-based memory element at a location of the memory allocation other than a byte boundary; and

storing logically adjacent bits in physically adjacent memory cells of an array of memory cells.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein performing the alignment operation comprises performing a rotate operation on the at least one padding bit of the first byte-based memory element and the at least one data bit of the second byte-based memory element.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein performing the rotate operation comprises performing a rotate left operation on the at least one padding bit of the first byte-based memory element and the at least one data bit of the second byte-based memory element in response to the first and second byte-based memory elements being back-padded.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein performing the rotate operation comprises performing a rotate right operation on the at least one padding bit of the first byte-based memory element and the at least one data bit of the second byte-based memory element in response to the first and second byte-based memory elements being front-padded.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein performing the rotate operation further comprises shifting the at least one data bit of the second byte-based memory element by a quantity of bits equal to a quantity of padding bits of the first byte-based memory elements.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing the alignment operation on a third byte-based memory element such that:

the at least one padding bit of the second byte-based memory element is logically adjacent to a padding bit of a third byte-based memory element; and

a data bit of the third byte-based memory element is logically adjacent to a different data bit of the second byte-based memory element.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing the alignment operation on a third byte-based memory element such that:

a different padding bit of the second byte-based memory element is logically adjacent to a padding bit of a third byte-based memory element; and

a data bit of the third byte-based memory element is logically adjacent to a different data bit of the second byte-based memory element.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein performing the alignment operation comprises:

performing a first rotate operation on the at least one padding bit of the first byte-based memory element and the at least one data bit of the second byte-based memory element; and

performing a second rotate operation on the padding bits of the first and the second byte-based memory elements and the data bit of the third byte-based memory element.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein performing the second rotate operation further comprises shifting the at least one data bit of the third byte-based memory element by a quantity of bits equal to a total quantity of the padding bits of the first and the second byte-based memory elements.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing a logical operation, via sensing circuitry coupled to the array, on the data bits of the first and second byte-based memory elements after performing the alignment operation.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising performing a realignment operation to return the data bits of the first and second byte-based memory elements to a byte-based alignment after performing the logical operation.

12. An apparatus, comprising:

an array of memory cells;

sensing circuitry coupled to the array; and

a controller coupled to the array, wherein the controller is configured to operate the sensing circuitry to:

move padding bits of a first byte-based memory element of a memory allocation including at least one byte having at least one data bit and at least one padding bit stored in the array; and

move data bits of a second byte-based memory element of the memory allocation including at least one byte having at least one data bit and at least one padding bit stored in the array such that an alignment of the first and second byte-based memory elements is transitioned from a byte-based alignment to a non-byte-based alignment,

wherein in the non-byte-based alignment the at least one data bit of the first byte-based memory element and the at least one data bit of the second byte-based memory element are logically adjacent at a location of the memory allocation other than a byte boundary and stored in physically adjacent memory cells of the array.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the controller is further configured to operate the sensing circuitry to:

move the at least one padding bit of the first byte-based memory element and the at least one padding bit of the second byte-based memory element; and

move data bits of a third byte-based memory element such that a different data bit of the second byte-based memory element and one of the data bits of the third byte-based memory element are stored in physically adjacent memory cells of the array.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the sensing circuitry comprises a compute component that is on pitch with a pair of complementary sense lines of the array.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the controller is configured to operate the compute component to perform a logical operation on the data bits stored in physically adjacent memory cells of the array.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the controller is further configured to operate the sensing circuitry to, after performing the logical operation:

move the padding bits; and

move the data bits such that one of the data bits is aligned with the byte boundary.
