Abstract

A computing device includes a complementary signal generator configured to generate first and second complementary signals, delay circuitry configured to introduce a delay in a signal, and control circuitry. The control circuitry is configured to transmit the first and second complementary signals at least in part by determining a length mismatch between first and second signal transmission paths, determining a delay based at least in part on the length mismatch, introducing the delay in the first signal, and providing the delayed first signal and the second signal to the first and second signal paths, respectively.

Claims (53)

1. A computing device comprising:

a complementary signal generator configured to generate first and second complementary signals;

delay circuitry configured to introduce a delay in the first complementary signal; and

sending a first test signal on a first signal transmission path;

sending a second test signal on a second signal transmission path;

receiving a reflected version of the first test signal on the first signal transmission path;

receiving a reflected version of the second test signal on the second signal transmission path;

determining a length mismatch between the first and second signal transmission paths based on a time of receipt of the reflected version of the first test signal and a time of receipt of the reflected version of the second test signal;

determining the delay based at least in part on the length mismatch;

introducing the delay in the first complementary signal; and

providing the delayed first complementary signal and the second signal to the first and second signal transmission paths, respectively.

2. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first and second transmission signal paths are coupled to a tri-state input/output buffer; and

the reflected versions of the first and second test signals are reflected from the tri-state input/output buffer.

3. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the length mismatch is based on a determined difference in total propagation time of the first test signal and the second test signal divided by two.

4. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the length mismatch in response to boot-up of the computing device.

5. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second test signals are pulse signals.

6. The computing device of claim 5 , wherein the first and second test signals are both positive pulse signals.

7. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the first complementary signal is a true signal of a differential timing signal and the second complementary signal is a complementary signal of the differential timing signal.

8. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein:

the delay is positive when the second signal transmission path is longer than the first signal transmission path; and

the delay is negative when the first signal transmission path is longer than the second signal transmission path.

9. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein second signal transmission path is longer than the first signal transmission path.

10. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the delay reduces a phase offset between the first and second complementary signals.

11. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein said introducing the delay in the first complementary signal at least partially compensates for the length mismatch between the first signal transmission path and the second signal transmission path.

12. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the delay circuitry comprises a phase shifter.

13. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the delay circuitry comprises a delay-locked loop.

14. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein said introducing the delay in the first complementary signal is performed in a digital domain.

15. A computing device comprising:

a complementary signal generator configured to generate first and second complementary signals;

means for introducing a delay in the first complementary signal; and

control circuitry of a controller of a data storage device configured to:

send a first test signal on a first signal transmission path;

determine the delay based at least in part on the length mismatch;

introduce the delay in the first complementary signal; and

provide the delayed first complementary signal and the second complementary signal to the first and second signal transmission paths, respectively.

16. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the means for introducing the delay comprises a phase-locked loop.

17. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the first and second signal transmission paths are at least partially integrated with a printed circuit board.

18. A method for compensating for a delay mismatch in signal transmission paths, the method comprising:

sending a first test signal on a first signal transmission path;

sending a second test signal on a second signal transmission path;
