Abstract

Generally, a sterile adapter for use in robotic surgery may include a frame configured to be interposed between a tool driver and a surgical tool, a plate assembly coupled to the frame, and at least one rotatable coupler supported by the plate assembly and configured to communicate torque from an output drive of the tool driver to an input drive of the surgical tool.

Claims (32)

1. A sterile adapter for use in a robotic surgical system, the sterile adapter comprising:

a frame comprising:

a body configured to be interposed between a tool driver and a portion of a surgical tool; and

a mount projecting from the body for receiving the portion of the surgical tool; and

a lock that is movable and selectively operable between an engaged position in which the lock secures a coupling of the frame to the tool driver and a disengaged position in which the lock facilitates a decoupling of the frame from the tool driver, wherein the disengaged position is blocked when the portion of the surgical tool is received in the mount.

2. The sterile adapter of claim 1 , wherein the mount comprises a surface generally perpendicular to the frame.

3. The sterile adapter of claim 1 , wherein the mount comprises a shaft hole configured to receive a tool shaft of the surgical tool.

4. The sterile adapter of claim 1 , wherein the lock is coupled to the mount.

5. The sterile adapter of claim 4 , wherein the lock is pivotable between the engaged position and the disengaged position.

6. The sterile adapter of claim 5 , wherein the lock comprises a first end that is configured to detachably couple to the tool driver and a second end opposite the first end that is configured to detachably couple to the portion of the surgical tool.

7. The sterile adapter of claim 5 , wherein the lock comprises a fulcrum disposed on the frame.

8. The sterile adapter of claim 1 , further comprising a plate assembly, wherein the frame defines a generally planar opening and the plate assembly is movable within the opening.

9. The sterile adapter of claim 1 , wherein the sterile adapter is configured to couple to a sterile drape.

10. A sterile adapter for use in a robotic surgical system, the sterile adapter comprising:

a frame comprising:

a body configured to be interposed between a tool driver and a surgical tool, wherein the body comprises a first end, a second end opposite the first end and a first side that connects the first end and the second end;

a connector member disposed on the first end of the body for coupling to a first portion of the surgical tool overhanging the body; and

a platform mount projecting from the first side of the body at the second end for receiving a second portion of the surgical tool, and wherein the connector member is on a side of the first end that is different than the first side and extends in a direction opposite the platform mount.

11. The sterile adapter of claim 10 , wherein the platform mount projects generally perpendicularly from the first side of the body.

12. The sterile adapter of claim 10 , further comprising a plate assembly, wherein the frame defines a generally planar opening and the plate assembly is movable within the opening.

13. The sterile adapter of claim 10 , wherein the sterile adapter is configured to couple to a sterile drape.

14. The sterile adapter of claim 10 , wherein the side of the body that is different than the first side is a second side and is transverse to the first side, and the connector member is formed in the second side of the body.

15. The sterile adapter of claim 10 , wherein the side of the body that is different from the first side is a second side, and the connector member is a groove formed in the second side of the body.

16. The sterile adapter of claim 10 , wherein the side of the body that is different from the first side is a second side and comprises a tool driver engagement member that projects from the body.

17. A sterile adapter for use in a robotic surgical system, the sterile adapter comprising:

a frame comprising:

a body configured to be interposed between a tool driver and a surgical tool, wherein the body comprises a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first side that connects the first end and the second end, and a second side opposite the first side;

a connector member formed within a tool driver engagement member disposed on the first end of the body, the connector member configured to couple to a first portion of the surgical tool overhanging the body, and the tool driver engagement member projects from the second side of the body; and

a platform mount projecting from the first side of the body for receiving a second portion of the surgical tool.

18. The sterile adapter of claim 17 , wherein the platform mount projects generally perpendicularly from the second end of the body.

19. The sterile adapter of claim 17 , further comprising a plate assembly, wherein the frame defines a generally planar opening and the plate assembly is movable within the opening.

20. The sterile adapter of claim 17 , wherein the sterile adapter is configured to couple to a sterile drape.
