Abstract

A device includes a schedule engine including a mode selection input. The schedule engine has an operating mode based on the mode selection input. The operating mode includes an opportunistic scheduling mode based on the mode selection input having a first value and a pipelined scheduling mode based on the mode selection input having a second value. The device further includes a buffer coupled to the schedule engine.

Claims (35)

1. A method, comprising:

operating a data storage device in according to a first scheduling scheme based on a mode selection input having a first value, wherein the first scheduling scheme is either an opportunistic scheduling scheme or a pipeline scheduling scheme;

detecting a trigger event;

sending mode change data that includes at least of the first value and a second value; and

switching the operation of the data storage device to a second scheduling scheme that is different than the first scheduling scheme, wherein the second scheduling scheme is based on the mode selection input having the second value, and wherein the second scheduling scheme is either the opportunistic scheduling scheme or the pipeline scheduling scheme.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first scheduling scheme is the opportunistic scheduling scheme.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the second scheduling scheme is the pipeline scheduling scheme.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the opportunistic scheduling scheme is configured to treat each die of multiple memory dies in an independent manner.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the opportunistic scheduling scheme schedules operations at one die independent of operations at other dies.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the opportunistic scheduling scheme uses a time estimation approach wherein operations are scheduled to a next die predicted to be idle.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first scheduling scheme is the pipeline scheduling scheme.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second scheduling scheme is the opportunistic scheduling scheme.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the pipeline scheduling scheme is configured to schedule the same type of operation to each of multiple memory dies at the same time.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the pipeline scheduling scheme is configured to schedule the same type of operation to each of multiple memory dies at a periods of time that at least partially overlap.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the triggering event is selected from the group consisting of: count of write operations, erase operation, and validate operation.

12. A method, comprising:

selecting a first scheduling scheme based on a mode selection input having a first value, wherein the first scheduling scheme is either an opportunistic scheduling scheme or a pipeline scheduling scheme;

scheduling one or more operations using the first scheduling scheme;

determining that an operation to be scheduled at a die is a first type of operation;

selecting a second scheduling scheme based on the mode selection input having the second value, wherein the second scheduling scheme is either the opportunistic scheduling scheme or the pipeline scheduling scheme;

scheduling a first set of the first type of operations;

detecting a first trigger event;

sending mode change data that includes at least of the first value and a second value;

determining that an operation to be scheduled at a die is a second type of operation based on the second value; and

switching to the second type of operation.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

selecting the second scheduling scheme; and

scheduling a second set of the second type of operation.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first scheduling scheme is the opportunistic scheduling scheme.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the second scheduling scheme is the pipeline scheduling scheme.

16. The method of claim 12 wherein the triggering event is selected from the group consisting of: count of write operations, erase operation, and validate operation.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein in response to detecting the first trigger event, configuring a data storage device to use a second scheduling scheme.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein one of the first scheduling scheme and the second scheduling scheme is used to schedule performance, at a plurality of dies, memory operations having a same operation type.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the other of the first scheduling scheme and the second scheduling scheme is used to schedule memory operations opportunistically.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising scheduling a memory operation according to the second scheduling scheme.
