Abstract

A method and system for authenticating a user to access a computer system. The method comprises communicating security information to the computer system, and providing the computer system with an implicit input. The method further comprises determining whether the security information and implicit input match corresponding information associated with the user. The method further comprises granting the user access to the computer system in the event of a satisfactory match. When authenticating the user, the method and system consider the possibility of the user being legitimate but subject to duress or force by a computer hacker.

Claims (44)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a touch screen sensitive to a user's touch;

a fingerprint acquisition device to sense a fingerprint;

a button to send a signal upon activation; and

a user access system comprising a processing circuit coupled to the touch screen, the fingerprint acquisition device, and the button, wherein the processing circuit is configured to:

permit viewing of a first set of applications without permitting an ability to view a second set of applications in response to a user actuating the button to send the signal that is recognized by the processing circuit;

permit viewing of the second set of applications in response to the user performing, on the touch screen, a geometric pattern that is detected by the processing circuit;

permit viewing of the second set of applications in response to the user entering, on the finger acquisition device, a fingerprint that is determined by the processing circuit to match a known fingerprint; and

permit viewing of the second set of applications in response to the user entering, on the touch screen, a password that is determined by the processing circuit to match a known password.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein a direction of the user-performed geometric pattern is detected by the user access system.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the geometric pattern is a line, a circle, or a rectangle.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the processing circuit is further configured to receive data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern and use the data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern to detect the user-performed geometric pattern.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the geometric pattern has a specified direction.

6. A method comprising:

permitting, with an access system of an apparatus comprising computer hardware and memory storing applications, viewing of a first set of stored applications without permitting an ability to view a second set of stored applications when the computer hardware detects an actuation performed by a user of a button of the apparatus; and

permitting, with the computer hardware, viewing of the second set of stored applications when at least one satisfactory match occurs, the at least one satisfactory match occurring when the computer hardware determines that a geometric pattern performed by the user on a touch screen of the apparatus matches a known geometric pattern, a fingerprint entered by the user on a fingerprint acquisition device matches a known fingerprint, or a password entered by the user on the touch screen matches a known password.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the known geometric pattern has a predetermined direction.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising detecting, with the computer hardware, a direction of the user-performed geometric pattern.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein the geometric pattern is a line.

10. The method of claim 6 further comprising receiving, with the computer hardware, data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern and using the data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern to determine if the user-performed geometric pattern matches the known geometric pattern.

11. An apparatus comprising:

a touch screen sensitive to a user's touch;

a device to sense a physical feature of a user;

a button to send a signal when pressed;

memory to store one or more applications; and

an access system comprising a processing circuit coupled to the touch screen, the device, the button, and the memory;

wherein the access system permits viewing of a first set of applications of the one or more applications without permitting an ability to view a second set of applications of the one or more applications, based upon the user pressing the button to send the signal that is detected by the access system; and

wherein the access system permits viewing of the second set of applications based upon one or more of the device sensing a physical feature that is determined by the access system to match a known physical feature, the user entering, on the touch screen, a password that is determined by the access system to match a known password, and the user performing, on the touch screen, a geometric pattern that is detected by the access system.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the physical feature is a fingerprint, a retina, or a voice.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the access system receives data representative of the sensed physical feature and uses the data representative of the sensed physical feature to determine if the sensed physical feature matches the known physical feature.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the access system receives data representative of the user-entered password and uses the data representative of the user-entered password to determine if the user-entered password matches the known password.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the access system receives data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern and uses the data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern to detect the user-performed geometric pattern.

16. An electronic device comprising:

a touch screen;

a fingerprint acquisition device;

a button;

memory to store one or more applications; and

a user access system comprising a processing circuit coupled to the touch screen, the fingerprint acquisition device, the button, and the memory;

the user access system to permit viewing of a first set of applications of the one or more applications without permitting an ability to view a second set of applications of the one or more applications in response to a user actuating the button to send a signal that is detected by the user access system; and

the user access system to permit viewing of the second set of applications in response to at least one event, the at least one event selected from the group consisting of a match, determined by the user access system, between an acquired fingerprint and a known fingerprint, a match, determined by the user access system, between a password entered by the user on the touch screen and a known password, and a detection, by the user access system, of a geometric pattern performed by the user on the touch screen.

17. The electronic device of claim 16 wherein the user access system detects a direction of the user-performed geometric pattern.

18. The electronic device of claim 17 wherein the user access system determines if the detected direction matches a specified direction.

19. The electronic device of claim 16 wherein the user access system receives data representative of the acquired fingerprint and uses the data representative of the acquired fingerprint to determine if the acquired fingerprint matches the known fingerprint.

20. The electronic device of claim 16 wherein the user access system receives data representative of the user-entered password and uses the data representative of the user-entered password to determine if the user-entered password matches the known password.
