Methods for treating skin irritation
The present invention provides a stabilized hypohalous acid solution (or formulation thereof), which may be conveniently packaged for sale, or stored for later use on demand. The invention further provides methods of making the stabilized hypohalous acid solutions, as well as methods of use for disinfecting mammalian tissue, including wounds and burns, and treating skin irritations, among other uses.
1. A method for treating an irritation of the skin of a subject, comprising: administering a hypochlorous acid composition to an affected area, wherein the composition has an available free chlorine (AFC) content of from about 100 to about 1000 ppm and is stabilized by dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the form of bicarbonate or carbonate of alkaline earth metals and having from about 0.01 to about 1.0% salinity, and a pH of from 4 to 7, wherein the hypochlorous acid composition is a solution, cream, foam, or hydrogel.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the irritation is characterized by an inflammatory reaction or hyperinflammation of the skin.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the subject has atopic dermatitis, skin allergy, rosacea, psoriasis, or acne.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the irritation accompanies a bacterial or viral infection.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject has a skin fungal infection.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition is created by a process that comprises electrolysis of saline.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition has an AFC content of from about 100 ppm to about 500 ppm.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition has a pH of from 4.4 to 7.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition has a pH of from 5 to 7.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is present at a molar ratio of from 5:1 to 1:5 with respect to the AFC content.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition contains 300 to 1500 mg/L of a carbonate or bicarbonate salt.
12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition is provided in a packaging that is nonpermeable to CO 2 or O 2 .
