Abstract

An endoscopic forceps is provided and includes a housing having a shaft. An end effector assembly operatively connects to a distal end of the shaft and has a pair of first and second jaw members. One of the first and second jaw members is movable relative to the other jaw member from an open position, to a clamping position. One of the first and second jaw members includes one or more cam slots defined therein and configured to receive a cam member that upon movement thereof rotates the movable jaw member from the open position to the clamping position. A resilient member is operably coupled to the jaw member that includes the one or more cam slots. The resilient member is configured to provide a camming force to the cam slot and to bias the first and second jaw members in the clamping position.

Claims (31)

1. An endoscopic forceps, comprising:

a housing;

a shaft that extends from the housing and defines a longitudinal axis;

an end effector assembly operatively connected to a distal end portion of the shaft and including a first jaw member and a second jaw member, at least one of the first and second jaw members being movable relative to the other jaw member from an open position, wherein the first and second jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another, to a clamping position, wherein the first and second jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween;

a drive element; and

a resilient member that extends from the drive element and is coupled to the first jaw member, the first jaw member pivotally coupled to the shaft by a pivot pin, the first jaw member positioned to pivot about the pivot pin in response to movement of the drive element,

wherein the resilient member is a tension spring having a distal end portion coupled to a jaw housing of the first jaw member by a rivet, a pin, or a bolt.

2. The endoscopic forceps of claim 1 , wherein the first jaw member rotates about the pivot pin when the drive element translates in an axial direction.

3. The endoscopic forceps of claim 2 , wherein the first jaw member rotates toward the second jaw member when the drive element translates in a proximal direction.

4. The endoscopic forceps of claim 3 , wherein movement of the drive element in the proximal direction tensions the tension spring.

5. The endoscopic forceps of claim 4 , wherein when the first and second jaw members are disposed in the clamping position, the tension spring is configured to generate a predetermined closure force between the first and second jaw members.

6. The endoscopic forceps of claim 5 , wherein the predetermined closure force is in the range of about 3 kg/cm 2 to about 16 kg/cm 2 .

7. The endoscopic forceps of claim 1 , wherein the pivot pin is coupled to a jaw housing of the first jaw member.

8. The endoscopic forceps of claim 7 , wherein the pivot pin is coupled to a proximal end portion of the jaw housing.

9. An electrosurgical system, comprising:

a housing;

a shaft that extends from the housing and defines a longitudinal axis;

a first jaw member and a second jaw member operatively connected to a distal end portion of the shaft, the first and second jaw members configured to couple to an electrosurgical energy source, at least one of the first and second jaw members being movable relative to the other jaw member from an open position, wherein the first and second jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another, to a clamping position, wherein the first and second jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween;

a tension spring that is coupled to the first jaw member, the first jaw member pivotally coupled to the shaft by a pivot pin; and

a drive element configured to tension the tension spring as the drive element moves in a proximal direction and as the first jaw member rotates about the pivot pin and toward the second jaw member, and wherein when the first and second jaw members are disposed in the clamping position, the tension spring is configured to generate a predetermined closure force between the first and second jaw members.

10. The electrosurgical system of claim 9 , wherein the predetermined closure force is in the range of about 3 kg/cm 2 to about 16 kg/cm 2 .

11. The electrosurgical system of claim 9 , wherein the pivot pin is coupled to a jaw housing of the first jaw member.

12. The electrosurgical system of claim 11 , wherein the pivot pin is coupled to a proximal end portion of the jaw housing.

13. The electrosurgical system of claim 9 , further comprising an electrosurgical generator configured to conduct electrosurgical energy to the first and second jaw members.

14. An endoscopic forceps, comprising:

a housing;

a shaft that extends from the housing and defines a longitudinal axis;

an end effector assembly operatively connected to a distal end portion of the shaft and including a first jaw member and a second jaw member, at least one of the first and second jaw members being movable relative to the other jaw member from an open position, wherein the first and second jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another, to a clamping position, wherein the first and second jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween;

a drive element; and

a tension spring that extends from the drive element and is coupled to the first jaw member, the first jaw member pivotally coupled to the shaft by a pivot pin, the first jaw member positioned to pivot about the pivot pin in response to movement of the drive element,

wherein the drive element is configured to tension the tension spring as the drive element moves in a proximal direction and as the first jaw member rotates about the pivot pin and toward the second jaw member, and wherein when the first and second jaw members are disposed in the clamping position, the tension spring is configured to generate a predetermined closure force between the first and second jaw members.
