Abstract

Increasing blood circulation, lowering intracranial pressure, and increasing cerebral perfusion pressure during the administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation by gravity-assist due to elevation of one or both of the torso and head of an individual.

Claims (49)

1. A method for resuscitating an individual, comprising:

elevating an individual's thorax and head relative to a support surface such that the thorax is elevated above the support surface by between about 5 and 15 cm and the head is elevated above the support surface by between about 8 and 25 cm;

performing chest compressions on the individual while the thorax and head are elevated; and

delivering at least one shock to the individual's heart using a defibrillation device after performing chest compressions for a period of at least one minute and while the thorax and head are elevated.

2. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 1 , wherein:

elevating an individual's thorax and head comprises placing an elevation device under the individual to support the thorax and head in an elevated position.

3. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 2 , wherein:

the elevation device comprises a structure having a fixed elevation position.

4. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 2 , wherein:

the defibrillation device is coupled with the elevation device.

5. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 1 , wherein:

the chest compressions are performed using an automated chest compression device.

6. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 1 , wherein:

the thorax is elevated above the support surface by between about 5 and 8 cm; and

the head is elevated above the support surface by between about 8 and 15 cm.

7. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 1 , further comprising:

regulating an intrathoracic pressure of the individual while the thorax and head are elevated.

8. A method for resuscitating an individual, comprising:

positioning an individual on an elevation device to elevate the individual's thorax and head relative to a support surface on which the elevation device is placed such that the thorax is elevated relative to the support surface by between about 5 and 15 cm and the head is elevated relative to the support surface by between about 8 and 25 cm; and

delivering at least one shock to the individual's heart using a defibrillation device while the thorax and head are elevated, wherein the defibrillation device is coupled with the elevation device.

9. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 8 , further comprising:

performing chest compressions on the individual while the thorax and head are elevated.

10. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 9 , wherein:

the chest compressions are performed using an automated chest compression device that is coupled with the elevation device.

11. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 9 , further comprising:

actively decompressing the individual's chest between each of the chest compressions.

12. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 8 , further comprising:

regulating an intrathoracic pressure of the individual while the thorax and head are elevated.

13. The method of resuscitating an individual of claim 8 , wherein:

the thorax is elevated above the support surface by between about 5 and 8 cm; and

the head is elevated above the support surface by between about 8 and 15 cm.

14. An elevation device, comprising:

a support member that is configured to elevate an individual's thorax and head above a support surface on which the elevation device is placed such that the thorax is elevated relative to the support surface by between about 5 and 15 cm relative and the head is elevated relative to the support surface by between about 8 and 25 cm; and

a defibrillation device that is configured to deliver at least one shock to the individual's heart while the individual's thorax and head are elevated, wherein the defibrillation device is coupled with the support member.

15. The elevation device of claim 14 , further comprising:

a chest compression device coupled with the support member, the chest compression device being configured to repeatedly compress the individual's chest while the thorax and head are elevated.

16. The elevation device of claim 15 , wherein:

the chest compression device is further configured to actively decompress the individual's chest between each chest compression.

17. The elevation device of claim 14 , wherein:

the support member is fixed at a single elevation position.

18. The elevation device of claim 14 , further comprising:

an intrathoracic pressure regulation device coupled with the support member.

19. The elevation device of claim 14 , wherein:

the support member elevates the thorax to a height of between 5 and 8 cm and the head to a height of between about 8 and 15 cm relative to the support surface.

20. The elevation device of claim 14 , wherein:

the support member comprises:

a base that is configured to be positioned on the support surface;

an upper surface that is configured to receive and support the individual's thorax and head at an elevated position relative to the base; and

an elevation member that is configured to maintain the upper surface at the elevated position relative to the base.
