Abstract

A medical implant including an anchor portion including a plurality of arms adapted to engage an internal tissue wall of a body from two opposite faces, wherein the anchor portion is configured such that at least one of the arms does not have an entirely overlapping arm on the other side of the wall and an opening portion adapted to define an opening for blood flow through the internal tissue wall, when the anchor portion engages the wall.

Claims (18)

1. A method for delivering a shunt at an atrial septum of a patient, the method comprising:

advancing a sheath percutaneously through the atrial septum to position a distal end of the sheath in a first atrium;

moving the sheath proximally relative to a core within a lumen of the sheath such that a first expandable end of the shunt extends distally out the distal end of the sheath and transitions from a contracted state within the lumen of the sheath to an expanded state in the first atrium;

moving the sheath proximally relative to the core such that a second expandable end of the shunt extends distally out the distal end of the sheath and disengages with one or more protrusions of the core to transition from a contracted state within the lumen of the sheath to an expanded state in a second atrium such that the shunt is anchored within the atrial septum to permit blood to flow through an opening in the shunt and thereby through the atrial septum; and

removing the sheath from the patient.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first expandable end comprises a first plurality of arms configured to engage a wall of the atrial septum in the expanded state and the second expandable end comprises a second plurality of arms configured to engage an opposing wall of the atrial septum in the expanded state.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first and second pluralities of arms each comprise petals configured to be released separately.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising creating an orifice in the atrial septum via a transseptal puncture tool.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the shunt is deployed within the orifice and self-expands within the orifice to further expand the orifice.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second expandable end of the shunt is caught between the sheath and the one or more protrusions of the core in the contracted state within the lumen of the sheath.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising gradually enlarging a diameter of an orifice within the atrial septum to a desired size.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the diameter of the orifice within the atrial septum is enlarged via a dilator.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the orifice within the atrial septum is enlarged via a balloon.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising rotating the shunt so that the shunt is in a desired orientation within the atrial septum.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising verifying a position of the shunt within the atrial septum via a radiopaque marker.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting a position of the shunt relative to the atrial septum.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving the core and the sheath proximally relative to the atrial septum such that the first expandable end of the shunt contacts a side of the atrial septum within the first atrium in the expanded state.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving the core relative to the sheath to transition the first expandable end of the shunt back to the contracted state within the lumen of the sheath.
