Abstract

Compositions including an odd chain fatty acid, and salts and derivatives thereof, and methods for metabolic syndrome treatment and prophylaxis are provided, including compositions and methods for treating diabetes, obesity, hyperferritinemia, elevated insulin, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and related conditions. Methods for the diagnosis and monitoring of metabolic syndrome are also provided.

Claims (9)

1. A method comprising:

using pentadecanoic acid in a supplement to human diet at a level sufficient to treat symptoms of metabolic syndrome, wherein said supplement is selected from the group consisting of food additives, food fortifiers, beverage additives, beverage fortifiers, or pharmaceuticals, and is administered to a subject at a daily dose comprising an approximate minimum of 3 mg per lb (or 6 mg per kg) of body weight.

2. A method comprising:

administering, to a patient, pentadecanoic acid at a daily dose comprising an approximate minimum of 3 mg per lb (or 6 mg per kg) of the patient's body weight, wherein the pentadecanoic acid is administered in a form selected from the group consisting of a supplement, a food, a food additive, a food fortifier, a beverage additive, a beverage fortifier, and a pharmaceutical.

3. A method comprising:

administering, to a patient, pentadecanoic acid at a daily dose comprising an approximate minimum of 0.3 mg per kg of the patient's body weight, wherein the pentadecanoic acid is administered in a form selected from the group consisting of a supplement, a food, a food additive, a food fortifier, a beverage additive, a beverage fortifier, and a pharmaceutical.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the pharmaceutical is in a form selected from the group consisting of a tablet, an encapsulated pill, a gelcap pill, a liquid suspension, a spray, and a powder.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the patient is a mammal.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the mammal is a human.
