Synthetic bile acid compositions and methods
Bile acids and related compositions and methods of synthesis and use. More specifically, deoxycholic acid and related compositions, said compositions being free of all moieties of animal origin and free of pyrogenic moieties.
1. A method for removing localized fat in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to said localized fat a therapeutically effective amount of an aqueous pharmaceutical composition comprising about 0.1% w/v to about 2% w/v deoxycholic acid (DCA), or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and at least one pharmaceutically acceptable excipient and/or carrier, wherein the deoxycholic acid has a 14 C content of less than 1 ppt.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deoxycholic acid has a 14 C content of less than 0.9 ppt.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deoxycholic acid has a 14 C content of 0.87 ppt.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deoxycholic acid has a 14 C content of 0.88 ppt.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deoxycholic acid has a 14 C content of 0.89 ppt.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous pharmaceutical composition is suitable for subcutaneous injection.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the DCA salt is sodium deoxycholate.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the DCA, or the pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, is present in the aqueous pharmaceutical composition at a concentration of about 0.5% (w/v), about 1% (w/v), or about 2% (w/v).
