Abstract

A welded yarn may have a cross section about a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the welded yarn wherein the cross-sectional area is comprised of two or more distinct portions, wherein the degree of welding in each portion is different, which May also result in different fiber volume ratios compared to raw yarn substrates.

Claims (24)

1. A welded yarn comprising:

a) a first portion along a radial cross-section of said welded yarn, wherein said welded yarn is comprised of a plurality of fibers;

b) a second portion along said radial cross-section of said welded yarn, wherein said second portion is positioned interiorly with respect to said first portion, wherein said first portion constitutes between 5% and 85% of an area of said radial cross-section of said welded yarn wherein a degree of welding in said first portion is distinct from and less than a second degree of welding in said second portion, wherein said plurality of fibers in both said first portion and said second portion are cellulose fibers, and wherein said welded yarn is made from a conventional cotton yarn in a single continuous process of applying a process solvent to said conventional cotton yarn and removing said process solvent after a duration of time.

2. The welded yarn according to claim 1 wherein said first portion is further defined as being from 10 to 50 percent of said area of said radial cross-section of said welded yarn.

3. The welded yarn according to claim 2 wherein a fiber volume ratio of said first portion is at least 10 percent less than a second fiber volume ratio of said second portion.

4. The welded yarn according to claim 2 wherein said fiber volume ratio of said first portion is at least 15 percent less than said second fiber volume ratio of said second portion.

5. The welded yarn according to claim 2 wherein said fiber volume ratio of said first portion is at least 20 percent less than said second fiber volume ratio of said second portion.

6. The welded yarn according to claim 2 wherein said fiber volume ratio of said first portion is at least 25 percent less than said second fiber volume ratio of said second portion.

7. The welded yarn according to claim 2 wherein said fiber volume ratio of said first portion is at least 30 percent less than said second fiber volume ratio of said second portion.

8. The welded yarn according to claim 2 wherein said fiber volume ratio of said first portion is at least 35 percent less than said second fiber volume ratio of said second portion.

9. The welded yarn according to claim 1 wherein said first portion is further defined as being not welded and having a plurality of raw fibers.

10. The welded yarn according to claim 1 wherein said first portion extends inward from a periphery of said cross-section by an equal amount about an outer periphery of said welded yarn.

11. The welded yarn according to claim 1 wherein said welded yarn further comprises a third portion, wherein said third portion is positioned between said first and second portions, and wherein a third degree of welding of said third portion is greater than said degree of welding of said first portion and less than said second degree of welding of said second portion.

12. The welded yarn according to claim 1 further comprising a bonding material positioned in said welded yarn having a chemical composition that is comprised of cellulose.

13. The welded yarn according to claim 12 wherein said bonding material is further defined as being positioned in said second portion only.

14. The welded yarn according to claim 1 wherein said welded yarn is further defined as being processed with an ionic liquid-based process solvent.

15. The welded yarn according to claim 14 wherein said ionic liquid-based process solvent is allowed to penetrate said welded yarn to said second portion.

16. A welded yarn comprising:

a) a first portion along a radial cross-section of said welded yarn, wherein said welded yarn is comprised of a plurality of fibers;

b) a second portion along said radial cross-section of said welded yarn, wherein said second portion is positioned interiorly with respect to said first portion, wherein said first portion constitutes between 5% and 85% of an area of said radial cross-section of said welded yarn, wherein a degree of welding in said first portion is distinct from and less than a second degree of welding in said second portion, and wherein said welded yarn is formed in a single process by subjecting a conventional ring spun cotton yarn to an ionic liquid-based process solvent.

17. The welded yarn according to claim 16 wherein said first portion is further defined as being from 10 to 50 percent of said area of said radial cross-section of said welded yarn.

18. The welded yarn according to claim 17 wherein a fiber volume ratio of said first portion is at least 10 percent less than a second fiber volume ratio of said second portion.

19. The welded yarn according to claim 17 wherein said fiber volume ratio of said first portion is at least 15 percent less than said second fiber volume ratio of said second portion.

20. The welded yarn according to claim 17 wherein said fiber volume ratio of said first portion is at least 20 percent less than said second fiber volume ratio of said second portion.
