Abstract

A tissue thickness compensator may generally comprise a compressible core comprising a plurality of movable particles, and a wrap surrounding the compressible core. The plurality of movable particles may comprise at least one medicament. A tissue thickness compensator may generally comprise a compressible core comprising a plurality of crushable particles, and a wrap surrounding the compressible core. The plurality of crushable particles may comprise at least one medicament. The compressible core may comprise a material selected from a group consisting of a biocompatible material. The wrap may comprise a material selected from a group consisting of a biocompatible material. Articles of manufacture comprising the tissue thickness compensator and methods of making and using the tissue thickness compensator are also described.

Claims (22)

1. A tissue thickness compensator configured for use with a staple cartridge, said tissue thickness compensator comprising:

a compressible core comprising a plurality of crushable particles distributed within; and

a wrap surrounding said compressible core, wherein said tissue thickness compensator is configured to be compressed to adapt to tissue during a firing motion.

2. The tissue thickness compensator of claim 1 , wherein said tissue thickness compensator comprises at least one medicament.

3. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge channel comprising at least one alignment feature;

a cartridge body comprising staple cavities, wherein said cartridge body is positioned in a first orientation in said cartridge channel, and wherein said alignment feature of said cartridge channel secures said cartridge body in said first orientation;

staples positioned within said staple cavities; and

a tissue thickness compensator releasably attached to said cartridge body, wherein said tissue thickness compensator is configured to be compressed to adapt to tissue during a firing motion.

4. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 3 , wherein said at least one alignment feature comprises a symmetrical shape.

5. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 3 , wherein said cartridge body comprises an asymmetrical shape.

6. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 5 , wherein said asymmetrical shape of said cartridge body is configured to apply a constant clamping pressure to tissue comprising different thicknesses.

7. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 5 , wherein said cartridge body comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and a thickness, and wherein said thickness of said cartridge body increases from said proximal end to said distal end.

8. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge channel;

a cartridge body comprising staple cavities, wherein said cartridge body is positioned in a first orientation in said cartridge channel, and wherein said cartridge body further comprises retention features which permit said cartridge body to be positioned within the cartridge channel in more than one orientation;

staples positioned within said staple cavities; and

a tissue thickness compensator releasably attached to said cartridge body, wherein said tissue thickness compensator is configured to be compressed to adapt to tissue during a firing motion.

9. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 8 , wherein said retention features comprise a symmetrical shape.

10. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 8 , wherein said cartridge body comprises an asymmetrical shape.

11. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , wherein said asymmetrical shape of said cartridge body is configured to apply a constant clamping pressure to tissue comprising different thicknesses.

12. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , wherein said cartridge body comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and a thickness, and wherein said thickness of said cartridge body increases from said proximal end to said distal end.
