Abstract

A surgical stapler comprising a first jaw comprising a first bioabsorbable matrix and a second jaw comprising a second bioabsorbable matrix is disclosed. At least one of the first jaw and the second jaw is moveable between an open position and a closed position to clamp tissue between the first bioabsorbable matrix and the second bioabsorbable matrix. At least one of the first bioabsorbable matrix and the second bioabsorbable matrix comprises a plurality of layers including a fibrous layer. The fibrous layer comprises a plurality of deformable structures each having an equilibrium configuration. The deformable structures are expandable and compressible from the equilibrium configurations to reshape the fibrous layer and accommodate for variations in tissue thickness when tissue is clamped between the first bioabsorbable matrix and the second bioabsorbable matrix.

Claims (75)

1. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a first bioabsorbable matrix; and

a second jaw comprising a second bioabsorbable matrix, wherein at least one of said first jaw and said second jaw is moveable between an open position and a closed position to clamp tissue between said first bioabsorbable matrix and said second bioabsorbable matrix;

wherein at least one of said first bioabsorbable matrix and said second bioabsorbable matrix comprises a plurality of layers including a fibrous layer, wherein said fibrous layer further comprises a plurality of deformable structures each having an equilibrium configuration, and wherein said deformable structures are expandable and compressible from said equilibrium configurations to reshape said fibrous layer and accommodate for variations in tissue thickness when tissue is clamped between said first bioabsorbable matrix and said second bioabsorbable matrix.

2. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said fibrous layer comprises a woven material.

3. The surgical stapler of claim 2 , wherein said fibrous layer further comprises a fiber selected from the group consisting of trimethylene carbonate, polyglycolic acid, polycaprolactone, and polydioxanone.

4. The surgical stapler of claim 2 , wherein said fibrous layer further comprises:

a first fiber comprising a first material; and

a second fiber comprising a second material, wherein said second material is different than said first material.

5. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said fibrous layer comprises a melt-blown nonwoven material.

6. The surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein said fibrous layer further comprises at least two fibers selected from the group consisting of trimethylene carbonate, polyglycolic acid, polycaprolactone, and polydioxanone.

7. The surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein said fibrous layer further comprises:

a first fiber comprising a first material; and

a second fiber comprising a second material, wherein said second material is different than said first material.

8. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said deformable structures further comprise a hydrophilic absorbable material.

9. The surgical stapler of claim 8 , wherein said hydrophilic absorbable material comprises a hydrogel.

10. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw comprises a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples, and wherein said second jaw comprises an anvil.

11. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a first bioabsorbable matrix; and

a second jaw comprising a second bioabsorbable matrix comprising a plurality of fibers and a deformable structure having an undeformed configuration, wherein said deformable structure is expandable and compressible from said undeformed configuration to reshape said second bioabsorbable matrix and provide dynamic redistribution of forces within said second bioabsorbable matrix.

12. The surgical stapler of claim 11 , wherein said second bioabsorbable matrix comprises a matrix selected from the group consisting of foams, fibrous structures, knitted structures, woven structures, nonwoven structures, and combinations thereof.

13. The surgical stapler of claim 12 , wherein said second bioabsorbable matrix comprises a melt-blown nonwoven material.

14. The surgical stapler of claim 13 , wherein said plurality of fibers further comprises fibers selected from the group consisting of trimethylene carbonate, polyglycolic acid, polycaprolactone, and polydioxanone.

15. The surgical stapler of claim 11 , wherein said deformable structure further comprises a hydrophilic material.

16. The surgical stapler of claim 11 , wherein said first jaw comprises a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples, and wherein said second jaw comprises an anvil.

17. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a fastener cartridge;

an anvil;

a first absorbable matrix releasably attached to said fastener cartridge; and

a second absorbable matrix releasably attached to said anvil;

wherein at least one of said first absorbable matrix and said second absorbable matrix comprises a fibrous layer, wherein said fibrous layer comprises a plurality of deformable structures each having an equilibrium configuration, and wherein said deformable structures are expandable and compressible from said equilibrium configurations to reshape said fibrous layer upon clamping tissue between said first absorbable matrix and said second absorbable matrix.

18. The surgical end effector of claim 17 , wherein said fibrous layer comprises a woven material.

19. The surgical end effector of claim 18 , wherein said fibrous layer further comprises a fiber selected from the group consisting of trimethylene carbonate, polyglycolic acid, polycaprolactone, and polydioxanone.

20. The surgical end effector of claim 18 , wherein said fibrous layer further comprises:

a first fiber comprising a first material; and

a second fiber comprising a second material, wherein said second material is different than said first material.

21. The surgical end effector of claim 17 , wherein said fibrous layer comprises a melt-blown nonwoven material.

22. The surgical end effector of claim 21 , wherein said fibrous layer further comprises:

a first fiber comprising a first material; and

a second fiber comprising a second material, wherein said second material is different than said first material.

23. The surgical end effector of claim 21 , wherein said fibrous layer further comprises a fiber selected from the group consisting of trimethylene carbonate, polyglycolic acid, polycaprolactone, and polydioxanone.

24. The surgical end effector of claim 17 , wherein said deformable structures further comprise a hydrophilic material.

25. The surgical end effector of claim 24 , wherein said hydrophilic material comprises a hydrogel.

26. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a fastener cartridge;

an anvil;

a first absorbable matrix releasably attached to said fastener cartridge, wherein said first absorbable matrix comprises a first fibrous layer comprising a first plurality of deformable structures each having an equilibrium configuration; and

a second absorbable matrix releasably attached to said anvil, wherein said second absorbable matrix comprises a second fibrous layer comprising a second plurality of deformable structures each having an equilibrium configuration;

wherein said deformable structures are expandable and compressible from said equilibrium configurations to reshape said first fibrous layer and said second fibrous layer upon clamping tissue between said first absorbable matrix and said second absorbable matrix.

27. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a fastener cartridge;

an anvil;

a first absorbable matrix releasably attached to said fastener cartridge; and

a second absorbable matrix releasably attached to said anvil;

wherein at least one of said first absorbable matrix and said second absorbable matrix comprises a layer, comprising:

a plurality of fibers; and

a deformable structure having an undeformed configuration, wherein said deformable structure is expandable and compressible from said undeformed configuration to reshape said layer upon clamping tissue between said first absorbable matrix and said second absorbable matrix.

28. The surgical end effector of claim 27 , wherein said layer comprises a woven material.

29. The surgical end effector of claim 28 , wherein said layer further comprises a fiber selected from the group consisting of trimethylene carbonate, polyglycolic acid, polycaprolactone, and polydioxanone.

30. The surgical end effector of claim 28 , wherein said layer further comprises:

a first fiber comprising a first material; and

a second fiber comprising a second material, wherein said second material is different than said first material.

31. The surgical end effector of claim 27 , wherein said layer comprises a melt-blown nonwoven material.

32. The surgical end effector of claim 31 , wherein said layer further comprises:

a first fiber comprising a first material; and

a second fiber comprising a second material, wherein said second material is different than said first material.

33. The surgical end effector of claim 31 , wherein said layer further comprises a fiber selected from the group consisting of trimethylene carbonate, polyglycolic acid, polycaprolactone, and polydioxanone.

34. The surgical end effector of claim 27 , wherein said deformable structure further comprise a hydrophilic material.

35. The surgical end effector of claim 34 , wherein said hydrophilic material comprises a hydrogel.

36. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a fastener cartridge;

an anvil;

a first absorbable matrix releasably attached to said fastener cartridge, wherein said first absorbable matrix comprises a first layer comprising a first plurality of fibers and a first deformable structure having an undeformed configuration; and

a second absorbable matrix releasably attached to said anvil, wherein said second absorbable matrix comprises a second layer comprising a second plurality of fibers and a second deformable structure having an undeformed configuration;

wherein said first deformable structure is expandable and compressible from said undeformed configuration to reshape said first layer and said second deformable structure is expandable and compressible from said undeformed configuration to reshape said second layer upon clamping tissue between said first absorbable matrix and said second absorbable matrix.
