Abstract

The invention described herein provides biological markers for the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of prostate cancer.

Claims (12)

1 . A method for identifying differences in gene expression between macrophage cells and non-phagocytic cells or differences in gene expression between neutrophil cells and non-phagocytic cells, the method comprising the steps of:

a) obtaining a sample from a subject suspected of having prostate cancer;

b) measuring RNA transcript levels of at least five or more markers comprising REPS2, DIPAS, TPRX1, DPRX, and GPC5 in a population of macrophage cells or a population of neutrophil cells isolated from the sample;

c measuring RNA transcript levels of each of the five or more markers in a population of the subject's non-phagocytic cells isolated from the sample; and

d detecting a significant difference in the RNA transcript level of each of the five or more markers between macrophage cells versus non-phagocytic cells or detecting a significant difference in the RNA transcript level of each of the five or more markers between neutrophil cells versus non-phagocytic cells.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising measuring at least one standard parameter associated with prostate cancer.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the standard parameter is selected from the group consisting of tumor stage, tumor grade, tumor size, tumor visual characteristics, tumor growth, tumor thickness, tumor progression, tumor metastasis, tumor distribution within the body, odor, molecular pathology, genomics, and tumor angiograms.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sample is a bodily fluid sample, a tissue sample, or a cell sample from the subject.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the non-phagocytic cells are T cells, B cells, null cells, basophils, or mixtures thereof.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the macrophage cells, neutrophil cells and/or non-phagocytic cells are isolated from the sample using an antibody, a ligand that binds to a molecular receptor, flow cytometry, fluorescence activated cell sorting, filtration, gradient-based centrifugation, elution, microfluidics, a magnetic separation technique, a fluorescent-magnetic separation technique, a nanostructure, quantum dots, a high throughput microscope-based platform, or a combination thereof.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject suspected of having prostate cancer receives treatment for prostate cancer, and the identifying differences in gene expression between macrophage cells and non-phagocytic cells or differences in gene expression between neutrophil cells and non-phagocytic cells occurs before the subject receives treatment for prostate cancer.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject suspected of having prostate cancer receives treatment for prostate cancer, and the identifying differences in gene expression between macrophage cells and non-phagocytic cells or differences in gene expression between neutrophil cells and non-phagocytic cells occurs after the subject receives treatment for prostate cancer.
