Abstract

A method is provided that includes reading data in a storage medium, detecting, during the reading of the data in the storage medium, by a controller a change in an encryption/decryption scheme used to read and write the data in the storage medium, in response to detecting the change in encryption/decryption scheme in the data, causing, by the controller, a logical block address to return an indication of being written in zeros when a physical block address associated with the logical block address encrypted using an first encryption/decryption scheme, and causing, by the controller, a write channel to write zeroes using a second encryption/decryption scheme to the physical block address.

Claims (27)

1. A method comprising:

receiving in a storage system a read command from a host system to read data stored at a specified logical block address, the storage system comprising an indirection system, a security system, and a plurality of memory locations each comprising a corresponding physical block address, the indirection system comprising a map that associates each logical block address to a physical block address, the security system configured to decrypt the read data using a first encryption/decryption parameter;

determining from the map a first physical block address associated with the specified logical block address;

determining from the map that the data stored at the specified logical block address was encrypted using a second encryption/decryption parameter different from the first encryption/decryption parameter;

returning zeros in response to the read command without reading data from the memory location corresponding to the first physical block address; and

writing zeros to the memory location corresponding to the first physical block address.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing a pointer in the map from the specified logical block address to the first physical block address.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein removing the pointer in the map from the specified logical block address to the first physical block address comprises removing pointers in the map for a plurality of logical block addresses.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein removing the pointer in the map from the specified logical block address to the first physical block address comprises removing the first physical block address from the table.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein information representing data written to the first physical block address associated with the specified logical block address were written using the first encryption/decryption parameter.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the map further comprises a corresponding flag associated with each logical block address.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the flag comprises a corresponding value associated with an encryption/decryption parameter that was used to encrypt data stored at the associated logical block address.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the flag comprises a value indicating that the data stored at the specified logical block address are invalid.

9. An apparatus comprising:

a storage system comprising an indirection system, a security system, and a plurality of memory locations each comprising a corresponding physical block address, the indirection system comprising a map that associates each logical block address to a physical block address, the security system configured to decrypt the read data using a first encryption/decryption parameter;

means for receiving in the storage system a read command from a host system to read data stored at a specified logical block address;

means for determining from the map a first physical block address associated with the specified logical block address;

means for determining from the map that the data stored at the specified logical block address was encrypted using a second encryption/decryption parameter different from the first encryption/decryption parameter;

means for returning zeros in response to the read command without reading data from the memory location corresponding to the first physical block address; and

means for writing zeros to the memory location corresponding to the first physical block address.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising means for removing a pointer in the map from the specified logical block address to the first physical block address.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein means for removing the pointer in the map from the specified logical block address to the first physical block address comprises means for removing pointers in the map for a plurality of logical block addresses.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein means for removing the pointer in the map from the specified logical block address to the first physical block address comprises means for removing the first physical block address from the table.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein information representing data written to the first physical block address associated with the specified logical block address were written using the first encryption/decryption parameter.

14. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the map further comprises a corresponding flag associated with each logical block address.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the flag comprises a corresponding value associated with an encryption/decryption parameter that was used to encrypt data stored at the associated logical block address.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the flag comprises a value indicating that the data stored at the specified logical block address are invalid.
