Abstract

Everting balloon systems and methods for using the same are disclosed herein. The systems can be configured to access and dilate body lumen and cavities. For example, the systems can be used to dilate the cervix and access the uterine cavity. The systems can also be used to occlude the cervix. The systems can also be used to occlude the urethra.

Claims (35)

1. A system for dilating a cervical canal, the system comprising:

an outer catheter having a lumen, the outer catheter having a distal end potion configured to extend into a vaginal canal and be positioned adjacent a cervical canal;

an inner catheter positioned within the lumen of the outer catheter;

an everting balloon, the everting balloon having a first end attached to the distal end portion of the outer catheter, and a second end attached to a distal end portion of the inner catheter; and

a dilating balloon attached to the distal end portion of the inner catheter, the dilating balloon being proximal to the second end of the everting balloon, wherein the inner catheter is axially translatable relative to the outer catheter to position the dilating balloon within an interior of the everting balloon,

wherein the respective everting and dilating balloons are configured such that, when the everting balloon is positioned in the cervical canal distal to the outer catheter, and the dilating balloon is positioned within the interior of the everting balloon, inflation of the dilating balloon dilates the cervical canal, and

wherein the inner catheter is configured to detach from the second end of the everting balloon upon inflation of the dilating balloon.

2. A system for dilating a cervical canal, the system comprising:

an outer catheter having a lumen, the outer catheter having a distal end potion configured to extend into a vaginal canal and be positioned adjacent a cervical canal;

an inner catheter positioned within the lumen of the outer catheter;

an everting balloon, the everting balloon having a first end attached to the distal end portion of the outer catheter, and a second end attached to a distal end portion of the inner catheter; and

a dilating balloon attached to the distal end portion of the inner catheter, the dilating balloon being proximal to the second end of the everting balloon, wherein the inner catheter is axially translatable relative to the outer catheter to position the dilating balloon within an interior of the everting balloon,

wherein the respective everting and dilating balloons are configured such that, when the everting balloon is positioned in the cervical canal distal to the outer catheter, and the dilating balloon is positioned within the interior of the everting balloon, inflation of the dilating balloon dilates the cervical canal, and

wherein the everting balloon is configured such that inflation of the dilating balloon within the interior of the everting balloon causes the everting balloon to tear or rupture.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the everting balloon is configured to promote a longitudinal break of the everting balloon during inflation of the dilating balloon.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the inner catheter comprises a sharp implement configured for tearing or rupturing the everting balloon during inflation of the dilating balloon.

5. The system of claim 2 , further comprising a mechanical structure configured for tearing or rupturing the everting balloon.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the mechanical structure is located on or within the outer catheter.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the mechanical structure is configured to tear or rupture the everting balloon after full eversion of the everting balloon and after initiating inflation of the dilating balloon.

8. The system of claim 2 , wherein the everting balloon comprises an intentional line along which the everting balloon is configured to tear or rupture during inflation of the dilating balloon.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the intentional line comprises a mechanical indentation or seam in the everting balloon.

10. A system for dilating a cervical canal, the system comprising:

an outer catheter having a lumen, the outer catheter having a distal end portion configured to extend into a vaginal canal and be positioned adjacent a cervical canal;

an inner catheter positioned within the lumen of the outer catheter;

an everting balloon, the everting balloon having a first end attached to the distal end portion of the outer catheter, and a second end attached to a distal end portion of the inner catheter; and

a dilating balloon attached to the distal end portion of the inner catheter, the dilating balloon being proximal to the second end of the everting balloon, wherein the inner catheter is axially translatable relative to the outer catheter to position the dilating balloon within an interior of the everting balloon,

wherein, when the outer catheter is stationary, inflation of the everting balloon everts the everting balloon and advances the inner catheter distally relative to the outer catheter, and

wherein the everting balloon is configured such that inflation of the dilating balloon within the interior of the everting balloon causes the everting balloon to tear or rupture.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the respective everting and dilating balloons are configured such that, when the everting balloon is positioned in the cervical canal distal to the outer catheter, and the dilating balloon is positioned with the interior of the everting balloon, inflation of the dilating balloon dilates the cervical canal.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the inner catheter is configured to detach from the second end of the everting balloon upon inflation of the dilating balloon.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the everting balloon is configured to promote a longitudinal break of the everting balloon during inflation of the dilating balloon.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the everting balloon comprises a mechanical indentation or seam along which the everting balloon is configured to tear or rupture during inflation of the dilating balloon.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the inner catheter comprises a sharp implement configured for tearing or rupturing the everting balloon upon inflation of the dilating balloon.

16. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a mechanical structure located on or within the outer catheter, wherein the mechanical structure is configured for tearing or rupturing the everting balloon.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the mechanical structure is configured to tear or rupture the everting balloon upon full eversion of the everting balloon and during inflation of the dilating balloon.
