Abstract

A system suitable for collecting and transporting urine away from the body of a person or animal may include an assembly having a fluid impermeable casing having a fluid reservoir at a first end, a fluid outlet at a second end, and a longitudinally extending fluid impermeable layer coupled to the fluid reservoir and the fluid outlet and defining a longitudinally elongated opening between the reservoir and the outlet. The assembly can further include a fluid permeable support disposed within the casing with a portion extending across the elongated opening, and a fluid permeable membrane disposed on the support and covering at least the portion of the support that extends across the elongated opening, so that the membrane is supported on the support and disposed across the elongated opening. The assembly can further include a tube having a first end disposed in the reservoir and a second, fluid discharge end.

Claims (41)

1. A fluid collection apparatus, comprising:

a fluid reservoir;

a fluid outlet;

at least one opening between the fluid reservoir and the fluid outlet;

a tube having a first end in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir and extending through the fluid outlet to a second, fluid discharge end;

a fluid permeable support distinct from and at least proximate to the fluid reservoir, the fluid permeable support at least partially defining a channel sized and shaped to receive the tube, the channel distinct from the fluid reservoir; and

a fluid permeable membrane that extends over at least a portion of the fluid permeable support, a portion of the fluid permeable membrane extending across the at least one opening;

wherein the tube extends behind at least a portion of the fluid permeable support and at least a portion of the fluid permeable membrane.

2. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fluid permeable support includes a spun plastic.

3. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an impermeable layer that at least partially defines at least one of the fluid reservoir, the fluid outlet, or the at least one opening.

4. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the impermeable layer is an integral, unitary structure.

5. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the impermeable layer is a multi-piece structure.

6. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the impermeable layer includes an adhesive tape.

7. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the impermeable layer includes a flexible cap and a backing portion that is distinct from the flexible cap, the flexible cap at least partially defining fluid reservoir.

8. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the impermeable layer further includes one or more securing portions that at least connect the flexible cap to the backing portion.

9. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the impermeable layer forms at least a portion of a fluid impermeable casing.

10. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the impermeable layer forms an impermeable backing.

11. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the impermeable layer at least partially defines the fluid reservoir.

12. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the fluid reservoir is substantially unoccupied.

13. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the impermeable layer at least partially defines the fluid outlet.

14. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the impermeable layer at least partially defines the at least one opening.

15. A fluid collection system, comprising:

the fluid collection apparatus of claim 1 ; and

a vacuum source fluidly coupled to the tube and configured to apply a vacuum to the tube sufficient to remove fluid from the fluid collection apparatus.

16. A fluid collection apparatus, comprising:

an impermeable layer at least partially defining a fluid reservoir, a fluid outlet, and at least one opening between the fluid reservoir and the fluid outlet;

a fluid permeable support disposed at least partially within the impermeable layer, the fluid permeable support distinct from and at least proximate to the fluid reservoir, the fluid permeable support at least partially defining a channel that is distinct from the fluid reservoir; and

a tube having a first end in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir and extending through the channel and extending through the fluid outlet to a second, fluid discharge end.

17. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the impermeable layer is an integral, unitary structure.

18. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the impermeable layer is a multi-piece structure.

19. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the impermeable layer includes a flexible cap and a backing portion that is distinct from the flexible cap, the flexible cap at least partially defining the fluid reservoir.

20. The fluid collection apparatus of claim 16 , further comprising a fluid permeable membrane that extends over at least a portion of the fluid permeable support, a portion of the fluid permeable membrane extending across the at least one opening.

21. A fluid collection apparatus, comprising:

a fluid reservoir;

a fluid outlet;

at least one opening between the fluid reservoir and the fluid outlet;

an impermeable backing at least defining at least a portion of the at least one opening;

a tube having a first end in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir and extending through the fluid outlet to a second, fluid discharge end;

a fluid permeable support distinct from and at least proximate to the fluid reservoir, the fluid permeable support at least partially defining a channel sized and shaped to receive the tube, the channel distinct from the fluid reservoir; and

a fluid permeable membrane that extends over at least a portion of the fluid permeable support, a portion of the fluid permeable membrane extending across the opening;

wherein the tube extends behind at least a portion of the fluid permeable support and at least a portion of the fluid permeable membrane.
